 The Shipibo community is an indigenous people of the Amazon composed of more

than 20,000 people who live mainly in the Ucayali region, Peru.

 The word Shipibo reflects the mystery of its origins and means "monkey man";

"conibo" means fish man.

HISTORY

Archaeologist Donald Lothrop in the 1970s from his explorations and

excavations discovered various archeological sites in the Ucayali Basin, He

states that the shipibo-conibo arrived in Ucayali from the North between 650

and 810 before Christ, when a new ceramic style that he calls "cumacaya"

breaks the previous sequence of the styles of the central Ucayali. Shipibo-

canibo belongs to the linguistic family and they live on the banks of the

Ucayali River, it is considered that downstream of Pucallpa is in the Shipibo

territory and both groups in the 2 zones, mixed together. Formerly the

Shetebo lived under the place "pollutes" are now integrated into the Shipibos.

The population reaches about 25,000 people distributed among 108 hamlets

or native communities.

Location

The native community of San Francisco is located a few minutes from the city of

Pucallpa, in the Peruvian Amazon. Here live more than 300 shipibos families, the third

largest ethnic group in the country.

Lenguage

They speak a language of the "pano" family that belongs to the "capanawa"

group of that family, the "pano" people are often referred to by the name of
an animal with which they identify. shipi designates the "pichico monkey" and

koni designates the "eagle", as for -bo is the plural morpheme.
