If you struggle with anxiety - I hear you. For years I felt trapped by my own
anxious mind, with what seemed like no way out.
At that point in my life, I was at the mercy of my mind, and felt like there was no
way out.
Sure, I was a (relatively) functioning human being, I had a job, and friends - but I
felt like a shell of a person.
So I get it when you say that you’re able to make it through the day, but you walk
around with this perpetual knot in your stomach, or ball in your throat. You feel
disconnected from yourself - like who you truly are deep down beneath all those
anxious thoughts - and other people.
You probably also feel tired all the time, like you’re on the verge of burn-out.
Maybe you also struggle with digestive issues like IBS, or constipation. You
probably struggle with what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, and find
yourself with irregularity around food.
Up until this point, I’m sure it’s felt like your anxious mind has been in the
drivers seat, colouring and shaping everything you do.
You’re going to stay stuck in the anxiety spiral, disconnected from yourself and
others, tired and depleted; never fully stepping into who you were meant to be.
No fun, right?
And I’m going to share with you how Yoga and Ayurveda can work together to
help you to master your mind, take control over your anxiety and step into
abundant energy!
But the first step toward taking control over your mind, is in understanding a
little bit more about how it works, and it’s underlying nature. And you’ll do just
that by taking the Mental Constitution Quiz.
Answer the quiz below, and tally up your answers. Similar to the Dosha quiz, this
gives us an idea of our mental make up, and what qualities predominantly make
up our mind.
You will likely have one Guna which dominates (and in our modern world, it
tends to be Rajas). At the end of the quiz, I’ll share with you a little bit about the
Gunas, and how they show up in our mind.
Xo
Ok, so now that you have tallied up your answers, which Guna predominates in
your life?
If you struggle with anxiety, and low energy as a result, chances are it’s Rajas,
with some Tamas, and a little bit of Sattva.
This is very common in our modern world, especially with the influx of
technology, social media, and our go-go-go lifestyle (even if you practice Yoga).
If we want to be able to control our anxiety, and create more energy and clarity
in our body and mind, we need to understand how the interplay of the Gunas
impacts us, and we need to begin to do the work to move our lives in the
direction of Sattva.
We also need to understand that these energies are not fixed; they are in a
constant flux. So just because your mind may be predominantly Rajasic right
now, doesn’t mean we can’t begin to make changes in our lives to move in the
direction of more Sattva.
Everything from the foods we eat, the people we hang out with, the shows we
watch and the practices we do (or don’t do) will impact these mental energies
and either move us in toward, or away from Sattva.
Below, I’m going to share a little bit more about the Gunas, and what they look
like within our body and mind and how they impact us from the perspective of
anxiety.
SATTVA
Sattva has the qualities of pureness, calmness, lightness, and is balanced and
harmonious. This is what we’re striving for in our life; it’s the foundation for
deeper spiritual practice. We know we have a predominance of Sattva when we
experience calm, and mindfulness in our lives - even amidst chaos. We will feel
clear in our mind, but also within our body. Digestion will be consistent and we
will have a lightness both in body and mind.
This is what we are striving for. From a Sattvic place, our mind can experience
more ease, and clarity, and when anxiety visits us, we will be better equipped to
control it. Though, we can actually have too much Sattva - we can see this in
those who have an “I’m better than you because I do these spiritual practices”
mentality. There’s always one, am I right?!
RAJAS
When out of balance, and in extreme excess, Rajas can lead to Tamas, or burn
out.
TAMAS
Tamas has the qualities of dullness, depression, lethargy, fear, and extreme
indulgence. When we are in a Tamasic state of being we likely don’t feel like
doing anything other than sitting on the couch, and watching TV as we eat an
entire bag of potato chips. Tamas may manifest in a lack of spirituality and
faith, and as a result of too much Rajas. Think of your typical “burn out”
situation.
But Tamas is also required in our lives to keep us grounded. Without the quality
of Tamas, we would lack the ability to stay on our path, working steadily toward
our goals and our Dharma.
When Rajas and Tamas are in balance, we naturally cultivate Sattva. But the
challenge is, most of us are NOT in a state of balance, and so we make choices
in our life that don’t support Sattva. So below, I’m going to share some simple
things you can start doing to build more Sattva.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The interplay of these qualities helps us to understand why when we are in the
space of anxiety (or an excess of Rajas) it can lead to burn out and exhaustion,
and sluggish digestive system (Tamas).
I hope you found this helpful, and have left with a better understand of the
current state of your mind, and some simple steps you can take to create more
Sattva - and as a result a calm, clear body and mind.
If you want to take control over your anxiety from the ground up, you can
schedule a free Anxiety Breakthrough Call with me. We will go over what’s going
on with you right now, get an idea of what’s working and what’s not working, and
then co-create your next steps so you can leave with a clear idea of what you
need to do going forward.
So glad you’re here, and taking the steps to better understand your body and
mind, so you can take control over your anxiety and ultimately, your life.
