Testing Recommendations « A successful testing procedure Is dependant on many different factors 6.9. applicator's experience, climatic conditions ete. The following information is given as additional ‘guidance: 3.1 Drilling Substrate Low test results are offen obtained when the concrete substrate is not sufficiently parallel with the surface. Force ff Force ff dolly. dolly Concrete oven T Coneiolo Uneven breakage Substrate breakage «Event dstbuod force - 1 Uneveny ditbuted fore - representative test value lower pull-off values 3.2 Drill Selection ‘There is a higher risk of micro-crecking and delaminating of the core sample when the ‘equipment is not securely fixed to the surface (refer also to section 3.3) i Core diiler with 4-point stand and ©! Hand driling has higher risk of water pump damage to the core sample Note: (1) The depth a core which bo hand drlled without affecting core Integy is dependent on several factors ©.g. qualiy of material, cil type, dil cylinder, climatic conaitions and dtillers expertencel As guidance hand drling techniquos are generally suitable for overall core depths ~i5~ 20 mm. Drilling Procedure The recommended procedure is to fasten the core drill and test specimens so that they cannot move or become loose. The drill should be free from significant vibration and should not allow lateral movernent of the coring bit. Drill wth a diamond coring barrel with an axis at 90 + 1° to the surface. Drill trough the repair product or system to a depth of 15 5 mm into the concrete substrate. Remove carefully tho diamond coring barrel in order not to damage the test specimens. }3.4 Number of Test Specimens ‘A recommended minimum 5 pul-off tests shall be performed on an adequate sized ‘surface. Locations shall be distributed and be representative, A reference test on the ‘concrete substrate shall be made for comparison. ‘The mean average from a minimum 3 test values shall determine the surface tension or bond strength, 3.8 Minimum Dolly Spacing ‘The approximate spacing between dollies is for guidance. ‘The Supervisor or Qualified Engineer shall define the exact test positions. Application Procedure Location and number of tests shall be defined by a Supervisor or Qualified Engineer. Locating the Test Position Ensue there are no reinforcement bars within the locality of the test area. In absence of specialist equipment use @ magnet with appropriate strength, ie Mark the test area, ‘Substrate Preparation Exposing the aggregate around the test area (1) Grind tocally the existing concrete surface or; (2) Carefully remove any weak laitance layer of a repair ‘mortar using adequate water pressure ‘Take care not to damage the concrete of repair mortar, eH Ensure the surface is clean of contamination which may reduce the adhesive bond strength. Check for any racks or defects by welting and wiping the surface with a damp sponge. {Inform Supervisor or Qualified Engineer of any defects in the surface, ‘Substrate Preparation - Drilling The dri shall be free from significant vibration and shall not allow lateral movement of the coring bit. Drill with a diamond coring barrel at (90 21) degrees to the surface, Carefully bore into the concrete substrate (through the repair system) to a depth of (16 #6) mm, Con Carefully remove the diamond coring barrel without damaging the test specimen, Using stee! and soft-bristied brush clean any debris, away from around the core. Carefully apply a thin layer of adhesive on the surface of the concrete, or mortar core sample. Do not fil the annulus around the core with adhesive. Step 7 Step 8 Press the dolly firmly onto the surface Step 9 Remove any adhesive from around the core area Prevent creep while the adhesive is curing attaching the dolly to surface with appropriate sticky tape. Step 10 ‘Attach the pull off equipment to the dolly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions ‘The pull-off equipment shall be concentric to the dolly ‘and (90 #1) degrees to the cored surface: Secure equipment so that it does not change position i during the test Step 11 15. Limitations + Do not perform this test on concrete which may damage the integrity of the structure + The tested concrete or mortar surface area shall be sound with no micro-cracks * Donot apply adhesive on a wet or damp surface | * The minimum substrate temperature shall be >5°C and maximum shall be not greater than the allowable adhesive application temperature stated in the PDS, Sika Services AG / Tiffonwies 16 / CH-8048 Zirich / Switzorland Phono: +44 (0) 68 436 40 40/ Fax: +41 (0) 68 436 46 86 E-Mail taylor david@ch.sika.com wun sika, com No. 8104 Author: D Tayior Date: 10/10 6. Interpretation of Test Results "16.1 Determination of Failure Typo The type of fallure of a specimen Is made by visual assessment. A recommended method of referencing is given in the table below.
