Context Clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or
unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to
which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence.

1. Definition
The unknown word is explained by using a more familiar word or phrase
Examples :
The meaning is usually right after the unfamiliar word and often separated
from the rest of the sentence with commas, dashes, or parentheses;
sometimes, or that is, or in other words is used.
Examples :
- Meat eaters, that is carnivores, are at the top of the food chain.
- The judge’s sentence was punitive; that is, itwas meant to punish the
offender
3. Contrast or antonym
Examples :
- The annual awards was operating perfectly but it was flawned by the
unexpected power cut.
- The manager was polite, unlike his assistant who was quite curt to the staff.
4. Comparison
The unfamiliar word is shown to be the same as or like another word; too,
like, as, similar to, or in the same way may be used to signal the comparison.
