BACKGROUND

Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million
diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease9 In 2000,India topped the world with
highest number of DM(31.7 million),followed by china (20.8 million),US(17.7 million)9.According
to Wild et al the prevalence of DM is predicted to double globally from 171 million in 2000 to 366
million in 2030(with max.increase in India)9.Its predicted that by 2030 DM may afflict upto 79.4
million in India,China 42.3 million,US 30.3 million9
The causes for DM are multifocal and revolve around the themes of
hereditary, obesity & lifestyle, diet & environmental causes such as mental stress9. Allopathic
medicatons include oral hypoglycaemic drugs, insulin6.While that of ayurvedic treatment is more
individualistic with lifestyle & diet changes, meditation, yoga & herbal medicines6.In Unani besides
hypoglycemic activity the drugs(herb) also have antioxidants, bitter and other activity related to
disturbance in carbohydrate metabolism13.In Siddha anti diabetic activity mainly through herbs
inorganic substance and animal product14.In Homeopathy mainly concentrate on functioning of the
pancreas in efficient insulin production. Medicine such as Helonias 200, Iodum 200 are used15
