Category C
In order to become an official, you must take an Officiating 101 class (or C Clinic) in your local area or complete the online version
(https://legacy.usacycling.org/myusac/index.php?pagename=purchase_clinic&type_clinic=official) of the class. At the completion of
either of these options, you then become a level C official. The class will give you exposure to bike racing vocabulary, the format of the
types of bike races that are available for you to work in your area, and some of the skills that you will be learning and practicing at those
races. In some areas you may also be required to shadow at a race or two before your first real assignment as an official.

As a level C official, you may be assigned to the following positions at a local race:

 Chief Judge (with enough experience)

Assistant Referee
Assistant Judge

Pathway to Upgrading

Category B
In addition to the assignment options above, a category B official is qualified to work as Chief Referee for a local race. Becoming a level
B official is one that is done by meeting the following requirements:

Be an active official at local races, working a variety of positions in a selected discipline

Complete the required modules for the discipline in which you are advancing—with a rating of 70% or above by mentor officials in all
skill areas

Track B modules (https://www.usacycling.org/officials/upgrades#trackbofficialsmodules)
MTB A Modules (https://www.usacycling.org/officials/upgrades#mtbaofficialsmodules)
Use a Google spreadsheet, set up by one of your USA Cycling National Technical Commission (NTC) members
(https://www.usacycling.org/officials/national-technical-commission), and invite experienced officials to help you assess how well
you have learned and can apply the skills from each module so you know when you have enough practical experience to upgrade

Commissaire
Advancement to category A and above is done by both recommendation and with very specific courses. The focus of the category A
class is on advancing skills to be able to apply them well at the national level. Both the Elite National Commissaire’s International
Commissaire’s courses are taught by the International Cycling Union (UCI). Applicants must meet very specific criteria and be
recommended by the USA Cycling Technical Director with input from the NTC.

For questions about the official's program, please contact Randy Shafer, Technical Director (mailto:rshafer@usacycling.org)

TRACK MODULES +

MOUNTAIN BIKE MODULES +

Format of the Modules

Each module comes with several parts:

Introductory material that explains the goals of the module and any prerequisites, including required reading
A module pre-test that you will complete and then check your own answers in the back.
The observed practical tasks of the material that you perform to pass the module
A check-off sheet where the tasks can be documented by the Chief Referee of the race(s) where you complete the module

Some modules are longer than others. Some could easily be done in one race. Others specifically require working multiple races. Some
require tasks you might not see at every race, so you might have to work several before the situation presents itself. Some modules
have more theory and less practical than others too.
