The factors affecting the port symbols in ECDIS are also explained. More comprehensive guidance and 0: available in the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office's ADMIRALTY Guide to the Pr of ENCs (NP231). Layout The layout of this guide is based on Symbols and Abbreviations used on ADMIRALTY Paver Charts (NP5011). This publication is divided into sections and the layout of each section is described below ' Offshore Installations L General Now tumarninmanan san te found incu inepck agar | Section Section designation Sub-section Column 1: NP5012 reference number Column 2: ECDIS Symbol Column 3: Term and explanation in English Column 4: Cross reference to equivalent NPS5011, INT1 paper cha Units Depths and heights depicted in ENCs are in metres Datums Alll horizontal positions in an ENC are reau 1984 (WGS84) datum. The vertical datu individual ENCs. he World Geodetic System s and heights will vary between book (NP100) and ADMIRALTY Guce to Further information is available in The Manns the Practical Use of ENCs (NP231), ECDIS Display General Mariners should be aware that the appearance of data displayed in ECDIS may differ substantially from that of the equivalent paper chart. The paper chart is a fixed presentation; it is produced to a specific scale and the information within the area covered by the chart is Portrayed in a way that ensures it is easily readable by the mariner. ECDIS provides 2 dynamic Presentation where all data loaded by the user is present but different settings determine which individual features are portrayed and how they are symbolised. The user builds up a picture of the ENC from individual options available on the ECDIS specific to their vessel, passage and preferences S-52 is meant to ensure that there is a consistent approach to displaying any given feature in the same way across different types of ECDIS. However, ECDIS manufacturers are allowed to provide their own symbol libraries to enhance the presentation of symbols or to improve the efficiency of display. The symbols used must look very similar to those provided in the IHO presentation library so that they do not cause any confusion to the mariner. Many manufacturers Provide the capability to switch between their own symbol library and the IHO S-52 version Presentation Library ECDIS chart display is generated from the rules and symbols specified by the HO S-52 ECDIS Presentation standard and implemented by the manufacturer of the ECDIS. The library may be subsequently updated to include new symbology or improve the display of existing symbols. NP5012 is a description of the IHO's Presentation Library Edition 4.0 (published in 2014), Mariners should be aware that the presentation library is periodically updated and its strongly recommended that systems are updated to the most recent version of IHO Standards toensure all features are portrayed correctly. The Presentation Library has Several elements to it. It contains rules which determine which symbols to display for a given feature and its individual attributes. It specifies a minimum set of user settings to be made available on all ECDIS and also specifies how those user settings control some elements of the display. In this way, ENC chart display can be tailored to the individual requirements of the mariner and their vessel characteristics. The Presentation Library also contains “ECDIS Chart 1’ which must be available in all systems and provides a reference set of the manufacturer's symbols for the ECDIS user. It should be noted that individual manufacturers may use the S-52 Presentation Library 2s 2 minimum standard and may enhance the appearance of certain symbols Display Conventions Some general conventions are used throughout the portrayal rules which are listed below Conspicuous symbols — Conspicuous symbols are displayed using 2 thick black outline while non-conspicuous symbols are displayed using a thin brown outline, e.g: £ £ Conspicuous Non-Conspicuous Centred symbols — Centred symbols are used to reduce clutter in areas of heavy traffic. Since such areas may be large we use large symbols and since ‘many restrictions may apply to a given area (e.g. traffic lane; precautionary area; no anchoring or fishing) the symbols have built-in offsets to prevent overwriting. A centred symbol must remain within the area even when the border of the display progressively truncates the area. Question mark symbol - If insufficient information is available to fully display a feature, a default symbol accompanied by a question mark will be shown. This may occur if a significant characteristic such as the shape of an aid to navigation is not included in the ENC data, e.g it Pe Low accuracy symbol - On some features e.g, rock. wreck and obstruction features, the following symbol is used to indicate low positional accuracy: Default symbols — When the portrayal for a feature cannot be determined, the following default symbols will display: Default symbols Point Line Information symbol —On features where additional information has been encoded using the attributes listed in the table below, the information symbol will appear: Information symbol (On most ECDIS this symbol can be turned off Attribute Acronym | Description Information INFORM _| Adcitional textual information is available Information in national | NINFOM | Additonal textual information is available language encoded in 2 national language Textual descripton | TXTDSC | Additional textual information is available a separate tet fie Textual description in | NTXTDS | Adcitional textual information in a separaie national language text file encaded in 2 national language | Pictorial representation | PICREP | A separate graphic file containing l information about the feature The $-57 objects that will display the information symbol have been split into two different viewing groups to enable the saitich off of INFORM and NINFOM while still displaying TXTDSC, NTXTDS ang PICREP. Date Dependent symbol (ietroduced October 2014 presentation library 4.0) — Features with temporal attributes listed in the table below must not be displayed by the ECDIS outside their effective dates unless requested by the mariner. When the mariner chooses to view 2 specific Gate or date range then the feature is displayed with the following new symbol Date Dependent symbol Attribute Acronym | Description Date end DATEND | Indicates the latest date 2 feature will be present Date start DATSTA | Indicates the earliest date a feature will be an present Penodic date end PEREND | The end of the active period for ‘seasonal feature Periodic date start PERSTA | The start of the active period for a seasonal feature ECDIS that have not been upgraded to use the latest IHO presentation library 4.0 are unable to display this feature . Prohibitions, cautions and information notes ~ Ther magenta colour as shown below as are four symbols in Depicts an area where entry is prohibited, restricted, or to be avoided Depicts a caution area where a specific caution note applies x Depicts an area where anchoring is prohibited or restricted The symbols may appear in one of two sizes. Smaller examples depict point features. Larger examples depict area features, where the symbol will appear at the centre of the area it depicts. New Object - An ENC may contain a feature called New Object, which is used to represent features for which no specific object exists. The definition of the New Object can be found through the pick report. A New Object may include a symbol instruction which determines its display, if not included it will display as follows: New Object symbols i o -o-+-e---' Point Line Alert and Indication Presentation Detection and Notification of Navigational Hazards and Detection of Areas, for which Special Conditions Exist — These new sections in S-52 list the S-57 ‘features and their attributes that will automatically generate 2 graphical indication within the ECDIS if the vessels route passes within a defined distance of the feature, the presentation is a yellow bounding box. Detecting the Safety Contour ~ Lisis the S-57 feature and attribute combinations required to detect the safety contour. When a vessels route crosses the safety contour the ECDIS will sound an audible alarm to indicate the potential danger, on screen the danger is presented with a red bounding box and transparent red fil Rocks, wrecks and obstructions have been removed in |HO presentation library 4.0 from Detection of Safety Contour process and moved to Detection and Notification of Navigational Hazards. This change is in line with the IMO Performance Standard (PS) requirement. IMO PS states that rocks, wrecks and obstructions will only be an indication within the ECDIS. Removing them from Detecting the Safety Contour will reduce the number of audible alarms in ECDIS, Display Settings ECDIS allows the user to specify a number of settings which influence # t display and alarm/indication functionality. The exact naming and configuration of options for display settings vary across different ECDIS systems. Users are advised to consult system specific guidance when familiarising themselves with any new system Safety Contour — The safety contour is selected by the mariner and is represented by a thick bold contour line and a prominent change in depth fill colour. if the mariner does not set a value, a default of 30 metres is used, Most ENC data is derived from paper charts which use a limited set of contour intervals (typically 0, 2, 5. 10, 20, 30, and 50 metres but others are possible). This may limit the availability of @ precise safety contour. If the safety contour selected by the mariner is not available on the ENC being displayed, the ECDIS will default to the next deeper contour and inform the mariner. If, when the ship moves onto a new chart, the safety contour previously in use is no longer available, the ECDIS will again select the next deeper contour, and inform the mariner. In monitoring mode, an alarm will be activated when the look-ahead watch vector crosses the safety contour. Safety Depth ~ The safety depth setting emphasises soundings which are less than the selected value. This is intended to highlight depth information where no appropriate safety contour is available in the ENC. The safety depth is selected in the chart setup display by the mariner. Depths shoaler than or equal to the safety depth are displayed in black, bold type. Depths deeper than the safely contour are displayed in grey. Isolated Dangers ~ Generally, rocks, wrecks and obstructions may be displayed as the isolated danger syntbol depending on the safety setting in the ECDIS ‘combined with the encoding of the object. @ Isolated Danger symbol All ECDIS using the new presentation library will have the functionality to show isolated dangers in shallow water. Users should use this setting with caution Colour Palettes ECDIS also contains different ‘palettes’ of o conditions such as day, dusk and night. T and all ECDIS should be colour from the standard ‘day-bright of the different palettes and th which may be used in different ambient lighting ours used in ECDIS display are standardised actual use. This guide reproduces colours ce. Mariners should make themselves aware bols in all colour modes. DAY-BRIGHT SETTING - This features stand out more DUSK SETTING - This setting is altered for viewing at dusk NIGHT SETTING - This setting is reduced further to preserve clarity and night vision. ECDIS Display Modes The ECDIS operator is able to control the level of chart detail displayed by using the three different display modes that are available on all models of ECDIS. The three display modes are ‘Base’ Display, ‘Standard’ Display and ‘All’ Information. Base Display is not intended to be sufficient for safe navigation. For further details see ADMIRALTY Guide to the Practical Use of ENCs (NP231). Additional Display Options Text Display — The display of text in ECDIS can be tumed on and off. On some ECDIS systems this can also be done for groups of features, e.g: a it buoy with text by Not Avric2s Traditional’Simplified Symbology - ECDIS can display certain features using either simplified or traditional symbology. Traditional symbology is similar to paper chart symbols and has been used except where stated in this guide. Simplified symbols try to convey the meaning of the feature using a symbol shape and colour combination. Simplified symbology is primarily used for aids to navigation, e.g: 2 A 4 Traditional symbol Simplified symbol Simple (Plain)iComplex Line-styles (Symbolised) - This option determines whether the limits of areas display with a simple dashed line or with a more complex symbolised line similar to that of the paper chart, ¢.9: =e tS F Lr F 4 | F 4 F 4 | t 4 | 8 ; cee Ela Simple Line-style Complex Line-style plex Line-styles have been used except where stated in this guide. Shallow Water Pattern — This display setting turns on 2 hatched pattem within depth areas less than the safety contour. It is designed for use in Night display mode when the depth colour fill may not be distinguishable Depth Shades — ECDIS systems allow the user to select how many colour bands are shown for the depiction of depths. The options are 2 shades or 4 shades, in addition to the intertidal colour. TWO DEPTH SHADES. Intertidal area Drying ine Shallow water depth shade Safety contour Deep water depth shade FOUR DEPTH SHADES Intertidal area Drying line Very shallow water depth shade Shallow water contour Medium shallow water depth shade Safety contour Medium deep water depth shade Deep contour Deep water depth shade 13 Other Information Pick Report The pick report enables detailed information about features to be obtained. By selecting a feature in the chart display the individual detail will be presented. On ECDIS using the latest, IHO presentation library this will also include objects which have no display or which apply to the entire ENC. External text and picture files indicated by the Information symbol can also be accessed through the pick report. In the example below, the pick report returns prioritised list of the features as a series of hyperlinks, with their S-67 acronyms specified. Clicking on the required feature from the list reveals the details. If this function is implemented within an ECDIS the Mariner must be able to configure the system function on and off. ‘The hover-over function will only be used on the following feature objects: Feature Acronym Lights LIGHTS Beacon, cardinal BCNCAR Beacon, isolated danger BCNISD Beacon, lateral BCNLAT Beacon, safe water | BCNSAW Beacon, special purpose/general_| BCNSPP | Buoy, cardinal BOYCAR Buoy, installation Buoy. isolated danger Buoy. iateral ia __| BOYLAT Buoy. sate water BOYSAW Buoy. special purpose/general BOYSPP | Lacress LNDMRK ——$ —_—— eee --s—i‘ wr”!!! Overlays In addition to ENC data, ECDIS systems may support the display of Radar overlays of other Gaia products. Gaution should be used to ensure this adaitional information does not obscure important navigational information ADMIRALTY Information Overlay The ADMIRALTY Information Overiay (AIO) is a digital dataset that is designed to be displayed Qver ADMIRALTY Vector Chart Service (AVCS) in ECDIS and other chart display systems to provide additional information to the mariner. It contains all ADMIRALTY Temporary & Preliminary Notices to Mariners (T&P NMs) and provides additional information from a comparison between AVCS ENCs and ADMIRALTY paper charts. Navigationally significant differences are published as ENC Preliminary (EP) Notices to Mariners.
