Experiment No. 3 Test of Fans and Blowers Course Code: _ME4ID Program: BCH Date Performec ed Date Submitted: > Instructor; =~ 4, Objective: The activity eims to demonstrate the operation and data gathering on multi lower test ri 2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs}: The students shall be able to: 2.1. Operate the multi blower test rigs, 2.2. Discuss the principle of operation of fans and blowers 2,3. Develop professional work ethics, including precision, neatness, safety and ability to follow instruction. 3. Discussion: : Most of central station plants and packeged units use centrifugal fans sinos, in general, they are the only type to give the required combination of high volume, high pressure and reasonably high efficiency. There ‘are four types of impeller: forward curved (muitivane), backward curved (single blade), backward curve (eerofol blade), and paddle blade. ‘The forward curved impeller is @ general-purpose fan suitable for medium pressure system and fairly oviet because of the low tip speed. The backward curved fan can produce higher pressure and wil not overload the motor if worked against a lower pressure. Early and small-capacity steam generator relied upon natural draft for the combustion gases. Proper design of gas pessages must be provided to have the driving pressure between the atmosphere and the gas within the generator, caused by the density difference between atmospheric air and the average gas density, ‘overcome the various pressure losses within the generator and supply the required air for combustion. Large steam generator requires an assist fo push the air in, pull the gas out, or both. For ths, they. use Targe fan, There are two types of fan used today: the forced draft fan and induced craft fan, 18 Multiple Fan and Blower Test Rig 4, Materials and Equipment: 5, Procedure: Fan and motor assembly with discharge duct Water manometer Pitot Tube (If not attach to the system) Rubber Tubings Steel Tape Thermometer Check all equipment and devices to ensure that there are no defects, Place the Pitot tube at the discharge duct (itis not permenently installed). See to itt is properly positioned and secured. Measure the inside cross-section of the discharge duct, Fill the manometer with water (half full). Be sure there is no trapped air in the water column. 3. Switeh on the fan motor. ‘Measure the velocity head by connecting both ends of the manometer to the Pitot tu rubber tubings, The velocity head is equal to the difference in elevation of the w: in the manometer. To measure the total head, disconnect the rubber tubing attached to the manor upper water column. Measure the difference in elevation of the water to the total head, Put back the rubber tubing, To measure the static head, disconnect the rubber tubing attached to m: lower water column. Measure the difference in elevation of the water colu to the static head, START-UP AND OPERATION A. Pre-start up . Lock out primary and secondary power source. Make sure installation is in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Check and tighten all fasterers, bolts, set screws and keys Make sure there are no foreign loose materials in the duct work fan it all aocess doors in fans arid duct. 5. Properly secure al safely guards Secure 20 . Data and Results: Check the line voltage with motor namepiate. . Momentary energize the fan to check the direction of rotation. NOTE: Incorect rotation overloads motor severely and results in serious motor damage. To change rotation of 3-phase motor, simply interchange any ‘wo of the thres line leads, Switch of the electrical supply and allow the fan to reach full speed. Check carefuly for © Excessive vibration. © Unusual noise +. Proper belt alignment ¢ Proper amperage and volt 10 out the electrical sary. If any problem is indicated, SWITCH OFF IMMEDIATEL) supply and carefully check for probable cause: Correct as n Type of Fan Capacity Phase | Volts RPM] Number of Blades 100 tr gal 4 | TuskAyAL ran 0.5 5° am co us g 2 |wane> 1 | 20 wenn 1 A wa Was AR CURVE CENTRIFUGAL | } 3 rad 400 | I 22d nie | 4 | | | | 1 | | | | | 4 | emusausT eat | 1 | 2m) we | @ | | k For Type { Fan: _quee Ava. van s 64 ‘Velocity Head: T | Static Head: { } Tol Hea: ] Ai Flow Rate Discharge Velocity: | Air Power!
