Clarifications

An Olet: a generic name for an intergrally self-reinforced butt welded set-on branch connection.
 The Olet and Weldolet trademark is owned by Bonney Forge
 ASME, ANSI, MSS and API simply referred to them as ‘branch connection fitting’

6
Definition

Branch connection fitting’ defined as ‘an intergrally reinforced fitting welded to a run pipe and connected
to a branch pipe by a buttwelding, socket welding, threaded, or flanged joint; includes a branch outlet
fitting conforming to MSS SP-97’ (ASME B31.3-2006)

Groove weld’ defined as ‘the joint penetration (depth of bevel plus the root penetration when specified).
The size of a groove weld and its effective throat are the same’. (ASME B31.3-2008)

7
ANSI B31.3 Welding Requirement

328.5.4(d) Branch connections, including branch connection fittings which abut the outside of the run or
which are inserted in an opening in the run shall be attached by fully penetrated groove welds. The
welds shall be finished with cover fillet welds having a throat dimension not less than ........

ASME B31.3 Clarification in Interpretation No. 11-10, 1993

 Question: In accordance with ASME B31.3-1990 Edition, para 304.3.3 (much early edition), may the
groove weld attaching an intergrally reinforced branch connection fitting to the run pipe be less than
fully penetrated, if the depth of the groove is greater than required for adequate branch?
reinforcement?

 Answer: NO. See para 328.5.4(d)

ASME B31.3 Clarification in Interpretation No. 13-11, 1994

Question: In accordance with ASME B31.3-1993 Edition, Addenda a, what is the effective weld throat
thickness required for a proprietary intergrally reinforced branch connection fitting?

Reply: The thickness is as required by the manufacturer’s design........

10
Bonny Forge’s Requirement

Bonny Forge says ‘Particular care should be taken to weld only the bevel portion of the fitting. This
......... prevents the erroneous practice of welding up to the rib on the skirt’.

11
Bonny Forge General Instruction

Drawings showed welding from root right up to the edge of weld bevel plus reinforcement

12
MSS SP-97 Welding Requirement

Para. 1.2: Fittings manufactured to this Standard Practice are designed to make a fully reinforced
branch connection in accordance with applicable piping code requirements, when attached, at an
opening in a run pipe by means of a full penetration weld

ANSI B31.8 Welding Requirement

831.41(j) The branch shall be attached by a weld for the full thickness of the branch or header wall plus
a fillet weld, ......

ASME B31.3 Clarification in Interpretation No. 22-22, 2006

Question: In accordance with ASME B31.3-2006 Edition, when para. 328.5.4(d) is applied to proprietary
integrally reinforced branch fittings, does the term fully penetrated groove weld describe a weld that fills
to the manufacturer’s weld line or to the top of the groove if no weld line is present?.

 Reply: Yes. See definition of groove weld under size of weld in para. 300.2. See also interpretation 13-11
