Name: Date ‘SIMILARITY CRITERIA a (COMMON CORE GEOMETRY 7 ‘We saw in the last lesson thet if two triangles are similar then corresponding pairs of angles have equal measures and corresponding pairs of sides have proportional lengths. Just as with congruence, we can tell that two triangles are similar with less information than all angle and side pairs. There are three major criteria that can be used to prove triangles are congruent. We will explore each one using similarity transformations. Exercise #1: Given AABC and ADEF with ZA= D and ZB -E,, do the following (@) Give a dilation of AABC centered at A that would make the image of AB FL congruent to DE. Be as specific as possible (&) Would this dilation change the mZA or mZB7 Explain Kw (©) Why would A4'B'C" now be congruent to ADEF' ? ‘THE ANGLE-ANGLE CRITERIA FOR SIMILARITY Iftwo angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of another triangle, the two triangles are similar. Evxercise #2: In the diagram shown, OR|| NP. Prove that AMOR is similarto AMNP Exercise #3: Ifin the above diagran MQ=8, NQ=6 and NP = 21, then whatis the length of OR? ‘Conocon Cone Czowerny, Untr #7 -DiLaTIONs AND SDOLARITY - Lesson #5 Mandlystauction, Rep Hoox, NY 12571, @ 2018 ‘There are two additional criteria for similarity that we will present and then informally prove. ‘THE SIDE-SIDE-SIDE CRITERIA FOR SIMILARITY If all three pairs of corresponding sides of two triangles are proportional, then the two triangles are similar ‘THE SIDE-ANGLE-SIDE CRITERIA FOR SIMILARITY If two pairs of sides of two triangles are proportional and the angles included between the proportional side pairs are congruent, then the two triangles are similar Exercise #4: Say that you have the following diagrams with only the information marked. In both cases, give a dilation, with a center and factor, that would map AABC onto an image AA'B'C' that is congruent to ADEF Justify the congruence using a congruence theorem A A @ ® 5 3] 10 c 4 B B 4 c By D 10 6| 15) F @ E 24 F Exercise #5: In the diagram below, which of the following information would not be sufficient to show that AABC is similar to ARST ? s a R ay BST AB BC CA B Q 2-4 and mZA=mZR ss BS @ mZS=mZB and mZC=mZT c @ FLL and mzB=mZs AC CB ‘Conocon Cone Czowerny, Untr #7 -DiLaTIONs AND SDOLARITY - Lesson #5 Mandlystauction, Rep Hoox, NY 12571, @ 2018
