Personal Statement

I have been playing and listening to the music of Maestro Brouwer since I started
studying classical guitar, in Brazil. His Estudios Sencillos were part of my daily routine
for a few years, and his perfect combination of European Classical Music with
AfroCuban heritage have always fascinated me. As an undergraduate student, I have
performed many of his pieces, such as La Espiral Eterna and Elogio de La Danza.
During my Masters, I have studied with João Luiz, the two times Latin Grammy
nominee, who recorded – as a part of Brazil Guitar duo – two albums dedicated to
Brouwer’s music: complete works for two guitars, and the first recording of The Book of
Signs, his concerto for two guitars. João helped me rediscovering Brouwer’s music, and
during my masters I have performed El Decameron Negro and his first Sonata for
Guitars.
My Master’s last paper was a brief analysis of Brouwer’s The Book of Signs
concerto, and my DMA project will be focused on his sonatas for guitar. Considering my
future projects, I believe that my participation on the Seminar will help me even more on
shaping my DMA project.

Best regards,
Romulo
