1.

Know that tensions rose in American during the antebellum

period (1820-1860) because Northerners and Southerners
disagreed about not the existence of slavery, but
its expansion into new territories that the US acquired from
the Louisiana Purchase, the annexation of Texas, and the
Mexican-American War (known as the Mexican Cession).
✅
2. What did the Compromise of 1820 do?
a. The Compromise of 1820 allowed Maine to enter the Union as a
free state and Missouri to enter as a slave state. It also banned
slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36, 30 parallel.
3. Now that you've answered that one, know that the main point behind
the Compromise of 1820 is that it delayed civil war by creating a
compromise about to where slavery could expand. See how this is
related to #1 above?

4. What did Justice Taney try to do with the Dred Scott case?
What was his decision?
a. Justice Taney, a Southern supporter, wanted a “firm united
action” against Northern abolitionist sentiment and ruled that
African Americans were not citizens and therefore had no right to
sue in court. He also ruled that Congress did not have the
constitutional authority to ban slavery from the states and
therefore made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
5. What was the consequence of the decision? Did it stop the
country from going to war?
a. The decision actually significantly heightened sectional tensions
between the North and South and only propelled the nation
towards Civil War 4 years later.
