K.CC.1: Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
K.CC.2: Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead
of having to begin at 1).
K.CC.3: Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral
0–20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
K.CC.4c: Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
K.OA.1: Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings,2
sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

● counting mats (one per student)
● counting tiles (10 of 2 colors)

● dot talk
BODY:
● use the document camera to show the +1 pattern. make 3 with 2 of one color and 1 of
another color. do this for all of the colors.
● have students make each number with the tiles. put 1 tile under 1, put 2 tiles under
2...etc. have them show the numbers as the number before it, plus 1.
● After all the students have their counting mats ready, use the whiteboard to show the
numbers as addition problems.
● PLUS SIGN; the plus sign shows that you are putting two numbers together.
● EQUAL SIGN: shows that the numbers on one side are equal to the numbers on
the other side.
CLOSE:
● The +1 Rhyme: show the last sentence of each verse on their fingers.
