Assignment 1
Class: TE A & B Subject: Finite element Analysis

1. Explain the FEM procedure and state its advantages, disadvantages and its applications.

2. Define :
a. Primary and secondary variable.
b. NBC and EBC.

3. Solve the differential equation using Variational method. Compare the answers with exact solution at
d du
u=3.5. D.E: [(x-1) ] =x2 ; 3x5 with the BCS: u(5) =10,u’(3) =5.
dx dx

4. Solve the differential equation using Galerkin and Least Square method. Compare the answers with
exact solution at y(0.25),y(0.5)
d2 y 2
with the BCS: y(0)=0,y(1)=0. D.E: 2
−10 x =5 0x1

5. A steel rod of diameter D= 2 cm. Length L= 25cm and thermal conductivity K = 50 W/moC is
exposed to ambient air at 20 oC with h = 64 W/ m2oC.Left end is maintained at 120 oC and the other
end is exposed to ambient atmosphere. Determine the temperature distribution in the rod using two
parameter Rayleigh’s Ritz approximation. The governing equation is,
-Өxx + CӨ = 0 for 0<x<25 cm
Where Ө = T – Ta and C= hP/AK.
The boundary Conditions are Ө (0) = To – Ta
And ( KӨx + hӨ )L = 0
