BIG ON LAND

There are so many different kinds of animals in the world. Some are so small they can hardly be
seen. Others are so big they are giant. Look how tall these bears are. Imagine how tall they would
be standing next to you! Grizzly bears and polar bears are both huge animals.

Grizzly bears have grayish-brown fur. Most of them live in northern forest.Polar bears have white
fur. It helps them blend in with the snow in the arctic, where the live. Grizzly bears and polar bears
are almost 9 feet ( 2.74 meters) tall when they stand on their hind legs.

Elephants can grow even taller than bears. This elephant is almost 13 feet (3.96 meter) tall. Thi
huge elephant lives in Africa.

This giraffe lives in Africa too. Its very long neck makes it possible for the giraffe to eat leaves high
up in the trees. Some giraffes grow to be 16 feet(4.88 meters) tall or more. That is even taller than
elephant!

A rhinoceros grazen on grass. It uses the large horn on its nose to defend itself . A rhino can weigh
as much as 5000 pounds(2.268 kilograms) that is about the same as 100 second graders!

A hippopotamus is even bigger. It can weigh around 7000 pounds (3.175 kilograms). Hippos spend
much of their time soaking in water. Both rhinos and hippos live in Africa.

BIG IN THE OCEAN

Most mammals live on land. There are some mammals,however, that spend much of their time in
the water. One of them is the walrus. It has tusks like an elephant. A walrus is a glant mammal of
the sea.

Elephant seals also live in and near the ocean. They swin in cold water.they have a layer of fat,or
blubber. Under their skin that keeps them warm. An elephant eal is an even bigger mammal than a
walrus.

The largest mammal in the world lives in the ocean. It is a blue whale. Like other mammals , it
breathes air. It comes to the surface to take a breath. Oddly enough, this giant mammal eats very
small shrimp.

The whale shark is the largest fish that lives in the ocean. It is not as big as a blue whale, but it is
still quite huge. A whale shark is as long as 9 fifth graders would be if they were lined up head to
toe on the floor.

Snakes are reptiles. One of the largest snakes in the world is the anaconda. These huge South
American snakes live in rivers , where they catch their prey as it swims past.

Lizards are also reptiles. The largest lizards in the world are Komodo dragons. They attack with
deadly bites from their powerful jaws. Komodo dragons will wait for hours in one spot until
something they want to eat comes by. They eat meat , including large animals such as deer and
pigs.

Los elefantes pueden crecer incluso más alto que los osos. Este elefante mide casi 3,96 metros de

BIG IN THE OCEAN

grande que una morsa.

El mamífero más grande del mundo vive en el océano. Es una ballena azul. Al igual que otros
mamíferos, respira aire. Sale a la superficie para respirar. Curiosamente, este mamífero gigante
come camarones muy pequeños.
El tiburón ballena es el pez más grande que vive en el océano. No es tan grande como una ballena
azul, pero sigue siendo bastante grande. Un tiburón ballena es tan largo como 9 estudiantes de
quinto grado si estuvieran alineados de cara a cabeza en el suelo.

Las serpientes son reptiles. Una de las serpientes más grandes del mundo es la anaconda. Estas
enormes serpientes sudamericanas viven en ríos, donde atrapan a sus presas mientras nadan más
allá.

Los lagartos también son reptiles. Los lagartos más grandes del mundo son los dragones de
Komodo. Atacan con mordeduras mortales de sus poderosas mandíbulas. Los dragones de
Komodo esperarán horas en un solo lugar hasta que venga algo que quieran comer. Comen carne,
incluyendo animales grandes como ciervos y cerdos.
