This unit has students examining the foundations of the American government.

This

four-week unit has students exploring the time periods of the Late Colonial Period, the

Revolutionary War, the Critical Period, and the Ratification of the Constitution. Throughout the

unit, students examined how the government of a nation influences the daily lives, liberties, and

freedoms of the nation’s citizens. Students analyzed and interpreted major historical documents

central to the United States government. These documents included the Declaration of

Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Students also conducted

simulation or other educational experiences that allowed students to understand the political

issues, structures, and compromises that characterized the development of the United States. The

five lessons attached to this page represent a sample of lessons aimed at achieving these overall

objectives.
