This
four-week unit has students exploring the time periods of the Late Colonial Period, the
Revolutionary War, the Critical Period, and the Ratification of the Constitution. Throughout the
unit, students examined how the government of a nation influences the daily lives, liberties, and
freedoms of the nation’s citizens. Students analyzed and interpreted major historical documents
central to the United States government. These documents included the Declaration of
Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Students also conducted
simulation or other educational experiences that allowed students to understand the political
issues, structures, and compromises that characterized the development of the United States. The
five lessons attached to this page represent a sample of lessons aimed at achieving these overall
objectives.
