QUANTIFIERS

Quantifiers are used in English to tell something about the amount or quantity of something.

Some quantifiers express a small or large quantity:

I have a few things to do before I go home. (small quantity)


I have many things to do before I go home. (large quantity)

Some quantifiers express part of something or all of something:

In Bizkaia it rains some of the months in winter. (part)


In Bizkaia it rains all of the winter. (all)

QUANTIFIERS FOR BOTH COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

All I bought all of the books you told me.


Any I didn’t buy any of the books you told me.
Enough I bought enough books from the ones you told me.
Less I bought less material than the list you gave me.
A lot of I bought a lot of books but none of them are the ones you told me.
Lots of I bought lots of books but none of them are the ones you told me.
More I bought more books than the ones you told me.
Most I bought most of the books you told me.
No I bought no books at all.
None of I bought none of the books you told me.
Some I bought some of the books you told me.

SOME COLLOQUIAL FORMS

Plenty of I have plenty of books from the ones you told me.
A load of I bought a load of books but none of them are the ones you told me.
Tons of I bought tons of books but none of them are then ones you told me.
Heaps of I bought heaps of books but none of them are then ones you told me.

QUANTIFIERS FOR COUNTABLE NOUNS (ONLY)

Both I’d like to eat both the meat and the fish.

A little I would like a little milk in my coffee, thank you.


(NOT) much I wouldn’t like much milk in my coffee, thank you.
A bit of I would like a bit of milk in my coffee, thank you.

SOME COLLOQUIAL FORMS

A great deal of Yesterday I had a tiramisu with a great deal of coffee in it. It was
disgusting.
A good deal of Yesterday I had some tuna sandwich with a good deal of mayo. It was
delicious.

EVERY

We say (separate) Every street I walked in had their shops closed. The strike was a success.
but we say Everybody knows that I am not good at maths. (together)
although we say I see my friends every day. (separate)
