Guide Questions

1. What is the speed regulation of a motor?

The speed regulation of a motor is termed as the change in speed from no load to full load.
2. How can the speed of a shunt motor be controlled? Explain in detail.
The speed of a shunt motor ca be controlled when the armature EMF is varied, the field flux is varied,
and the armature resistance is also varied. It can be seen that shunt motor speed is created if the field
flux increases then the speed of the shaft decreases while the torque also increases.
3. What is the practical difference between a separately excited shunt and a shunt DC motor?
The separately excited shunt motor has a field winding from the source and its armature is excited from
another supply while in a shunt DC motor the armature and field windings are connected parallel to the
supply.
4. What effect does armature reaction have on the torque-speed characteristic of a shunt DC motor? Can
the effect of armature reaction be serious? What can be done to remedy this problem?
The shape of the torque speed characteristics will change due to the armatue reaction in the motor. Yes,
the effect of armature can be serious due to the changes in the shape of the torque speed. The remedy is
to maintain the armature reaction produced.
Interpretation of Results

A DC shunt motor which is also known as a shunt wound DC motor is a type of self-excited DC motor
where the field windings are shunted to or are connected in parallel to the armature winding of the motor. Since
they are connected in parallel, the armature and field windings are exposed to the same supply voltage.

Based on the experiment, as the values of the torque is varied, the field current, the supply voltage, and
field power remained constant all throughout. The value of the speed obtained decreases as the torque increases
making the inversely proportional to each other. It can be seen also that the armature current obtained is
increasing while the torque is being increased making them directly proportional. Due to constant value of the
voltage supply and field current, the field power values obtained remained constant. While the armature power
values obtained is increasing because of the increasing value of the armature current. Input power and output
power is then obtained and the efficiency was computed. It can be seen in the graph that efficiency is increasing
until 0.60 (Nm)(p.u.) then decreased until it reached 1.10 (Nm)(p.u.). It is then most efficient at 0.60 (Nm)(p.u.).
The relationship of the armature current vs the torque is shown in the graph and it shows an increasing trend
direct proportionality is proven. The relationship of the speed vs the torque was also shown in the graph and it
can be observed that they are inversely proportional because of the decreasing trend.
Conclusion

 An armature is the component of an electric machine which carries alternating current.

 The armature windings conduct AC current even on DC machines.
 As the value of the torque is given increasingly, the value of the speed decreases making them inversely
proportional. It is proven that torque is a function of current and not speed.
 For a given motor with a constant input voltage, the speed of the motor is going to be determined by the
load on the motor shaft.
 For a given load, the only way to increase the speed is to increase the voltage. And this increase in speed
will require some more torque to accelerate but after it reaches its new speed, the torque will back off to
its original torque.
 Self-excited generators have field magnets that are energized by the current produced by the generators
themselves. Due to residual magnetism, there is always present flux in the poles.
 The total of the load current and the field current is equal to the armature current.
 The output voltage is at maximum when the field current is at maximum level as well. However, when
there is a load applied in the output terminal, there will be a decrease in the field current.
 The output power computed from the formula gives an increasing value as the torque increases making
them directly proportional.
