CE132P THEORY OF STRUCTURES 2

MAPUA UNIVERSITY
SCHOOL OF CIVIL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING
• A classical technique for analyzing statically indeterminate beams and
frames.

• Force Method: Solve for unknown (redundant) forces using

compatibility equations.

• Slope Deflection Method: Solve for unknown joint rotations and

deflections using equilibrium equations.
• In this lecture, we will demonstrate the ease which the method can be
used to analyze continuous beams. As the name suggest, this method
involves distributing moments what does that mean exactly?
• It means giving a bending moment at a joint then we distribute it among
the other joints of the structure.
• The joints that receive a part of that moment in turn distribute it
among the other joints. This process repeats itself until every joint is
balance with respect to the bending moment.
• If a joint connects two members like this, then any bending
moment found at the joint, first needs to be distributed between
the near ends of the two members.
• How? In proportion to the relative stiffness of the members.
• The more rigid member absorbs a larger share of the moment.
• We measure the stiffness of each member in terms of it's E, I
and L.
• More specifically, we define EI/L as the stiffness coefficient.
