1. Motivation
What can you say about this picture?

The advent of technology and the popularity of
social media and popularity of social media
have proven the gap between the people in the
21st century has almost completely waned. With
one search and a simple click on facebook, any
user can add and confirm as many friends as
one wants. With the convenience that
technology brings in making friends, do you
think that being a friend and befriending
another has become superficial?

2. Presentation
Now, we are going to read a story about
friendship. It is entitled, “The Little Prince”. But
before reading it, let me tell you something
about its author.

Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, comte de


Saint-Exupéry, 29 June 1900 – 31 July 1944),
was a French writer, poet, aristocrat, journalist
and pioneering aviator. He became a laureate
of several of France's highest literary
awards and also won the United
States National Book Award. He is best
remembered for his novella The Little
Prince (Le Petit Prince) and for his lyrical
aviation writings, including Wind, Sand and
Stars and Night Flight.

3. Presentation

Get your book, Celebrating Diversity through
World Literature and open it to page 411. Read
the story “The Little Prince” and embark on his
discovery of friendship.

Questions:
1. Who are the characters that are present
in the excerpt? Can you describe both (Answer may vary.)
of them?
2. Why couldn’t the fox play with the
prince?
3. How important is the “rite” or “ritual” of
taming in the friendship of the Little
Prince and the fox?
4. What made the rose of the Little Prince
owned important?
5. What is the fox’s secret? Do you agree
with it?
6. Do you think you have tamed another
person and have been tamed as well?

All of you has an idea what sensory images is,


right?
Sensory images is a strategy readers use to
think more deeply about a text. It is when a
reader combines their schema and the
information in the text to create an image in
their mind. This image can represent all the five
senses (visual, smell, taste, sound, touch or
feeling).

Practice Exercise #1
Directions: In triads, describe the Little Prince
and the Fox by writing a sentence that would
appeal to the senses. Be sure to use words
that will create pictures in the minds of your
readers.
