Info for River Torrens

During the winter period, the river is subject to inflows of nutrients that
contribute to shock over loading of the ecosystem. This is in the form of
grass clippings, leaf litter and other organic matter. This is washed into
the river system, separates out and sinks to the bottom. When the inflows
stop, this is when the problems start. The organic matter then
decomposes and releases nutrients into the surrounding water causing s
algae blooms due to the release of phosphorus and nitrogen into the
water. If Ureak was added to the water, it would break down the
decomposing organic matter and reduce the amount of nitrogen and
phosphorus released into the river. Regular applications of Ureak would
break down all of the matter and eliminate algae blooms. The nitrogen
would be released into the air as an odourless gas. There have been
successful trials carried out to confirm this. The Mt Compass trial results
are attached.
