Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Notif ication of any inaccuracy or ambiguit y found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Asphalt and
Sprayed Surfacing. It is one of a series of Standards dealing with road and pavement
construction using bituminous materials. Other Standards in the series deal with the
materials and placing of asphalt (hot-mixed) and the laying and compacting of asphalt.
Standards for the bituminous materials specified have been prepared by the Standards
Australia Committee on Bitumen and Related Products (for Roadmaking).
The objective of this Standard is to provide manufacturers, specifiers and designers of
asphalt mixes with requirements for the manufacture of cold mix asphalt intended for use
as a permanent repair on lightly trafficked roads or as a temporary repair of more heavily
trafficked roads.
The Standard encompasses a wide range of requirements including raw material
specifications, mix requirements and sampling.
The term ‘informative’ has been used in this standard to indicate that the Appendix is for
information and guidance only.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA
Australian Standard
Cold mix asphalt for maintenance patching
1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for cold mix asphalt for use as a road
maintenance patching material that is suitable for stockpiling prior to use. In particular,
this Standard includes requirements for materials, typical mix proportions, production
temperatures, and sampling and testing methods.
Cold asphalt mixes produced in accordance with this Standard are intended for use as
permanent repair of bituminous surfacing on lightly trafficked roads or as temporary
repair of more heavily trafficked roads. Other forms of cold bituminous mixtures intended
for use as structural pavement layers are not covered by this Standard.

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the following definitions apply:
3.1 Binder —a bituminous material which is modified by emulsification or addition of
fluxes, cutters and additives, added at the time of production of the cold mix.
3.2 Bitumen emulsion — a liquid product in which a substantial amount of bitumen
(to which some oil may be added) is dispersed in a finely divided condition in water,
and stabilised, by means of one or more emulsifying agents.
3.3 Bituminous — having physical properties similar to those of bitumen, or containing
substances having those properties.
3.4 Coarse aggregate — general term used to differentiate between various sizes of
aggregate; usually material retained on a 4.75 mm nominal aperture size sieve as
designated in AS 1152.
3.5 Cold mix asphalt —a mixture of bituminous binder and aggregate, with or without
added mineral filler, produced warm or cold in a mixing plant and delivered in a workable
condition suitable for stockpiling, and for spreading and compaction. In this Standard,
cold mix shall mean cold mix asphalt.
