Besides the surface wave suppression capacity of EBG, another favorable application of EBG is to design

a low profile antenna. When a wire antenna is placed vertically above a PEC ground plane then the
image current has the same direction as the antenna current and reinforces the radiation from the
original current. Hence the antenna will achieve a high radiation efficiency as well as gain but it
experiences a large antenna height due to the vertical placement of the current. To design a low profile
antenna, one may place the antenna horizontally closed to the PEC ground plane. But the antenna will
suffer the poor radiation efficiency due to the opposite image current cancels the radiation from the
original current.
