“I’m able to stay calm when I focus on the bigger picture and break down my

From there, I make a list of action items with reasonable deadlines. Even if the
big project is due tomorrow, I ask myself, ‘What’s something I can tackle in the
next 30 minutes?’ Before I know it, I’ve made significant progress and that
impossible project doesn’t seem so impossible.

In my previous job, a client was yelling on the phone. I
understand that his reaction was completely out of frustration.
So instead of taking it personally, I tried to calm him done, and
ensured that his concern was well heard. How did I do it? Well,
I listened to him carefully and apologized once he finished. It
ended up being a win-win situation for everyone.”

“I make a to-do list with timelines and stick to this until any
further revision of schedule is announced. That’s how I manage
time.”

Prepare reports, maintain records and databases, as well as perform other related work in conjunction
with HUD-VASH Case Managers and the Veterans who are enrolled in the program. Follow up with
tenants participants as they search for permanent housing. The Housing Specialist is responsible for
taking veterans out to see units that are available for rent and report the outcome of these visits weekly.
Keep other staff informed of any new units that are available. Assist participants with housing related
issues relevant to obtaining/fulfilling lease requirements such as initial household set up, budgeting,
housekeeping, health, safety/security concerns, contacting the landlord about repairs and other problems
in the home. \\

Social workers also have a direct influence on someone else’s life, which can be
extremely rewarding, but also emotionally difficult, which is why social work requires a
unique combination of intelligence and emotional strength.
Social work is a challenging, changing, high-growth profession that puts social workers
in a position to make an actual difference in many people’s lives.
At any point during the day, you can get a phone call that requires you to drop
everything and go to the scene of a crisis. You have to attend people's homes,
schools, hospitals and community centres. Being an effective social worker means
engaging with the community and this cannot be done from behind a desk. In
fact, when you do eventually get to sit down at your desk, you enjoy the short
break.
