CSP Question 01/13/2010 – Ventilation

The average velocity pressure inside a round duct with a 15 inch diameter is 1.2 inches
of water. What is the airflow in the duct?

A. 5400 cfm
B. 7100 cfm
C. 8700 cfm
D. 9600 cfm

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate the air velocity.

V = 4005 VP = 4005 1.2 = 4387 ft/min

Step 2: Calculate the coss-sectional area of the duct.

πD2
A= where D = diameter in feet (15 inches = 1.25 feet)
4
3.14 (1.25 ft )
2

A= = 1.23 ft2

Step 3: Calculate airflow

Q = VA

Q = (4387 ft/min) (1.23 ft2) = 5396 ft3/min

The correct solution is A.
