Super 30 is a movie of struggle and about overcoming life’s hazards, well portrayed on the
silver screen by Hrithik Roshan. He plays Anand Kumar, the math genius on whose life the
movie is based. Anand Kumar’s life journey is huddle race right from the beginning. His
brilliance in Math gets him a place in Cambridge, but he can’t make it there due to his
poverty-stricken background and his father’s untimely death.

To spice up the movie, director Vikas Bahl brings in Hrithik’s love story with Mrunal
Thakur. Mrunal shines in her limited performance on the screen. Her acting prowess doesn’t
go unnoticed. But the love story does look out of place in the film’s narrative.

Anand Kumar is elevated to a good life from his hapless state by Lallan Singh (Aditya
Srivastava) at his IIT coaching center. Anand is made to teach mathematics to IIT aspirants.
The job brings his life back on the track but for a short while.

Anand’s sudden realization of helping the destitute and needy students who have all the
capabilities to excel in IIT entrance exams, but no access to it due to poverty, makes him
dump his well-paid job and start free coaching for those underprivileged. This is the
beginning of Super 30.

Lallan Singh (Aditya Srivastava) along with the education minister (Pankaj Tripathi) have
given brilliant performances in their respective roles, exposing the dirty parallel world of
coaching classes which churn out crores of money from the IIT aspirants.

Anand’s Super 30 is not a sing song tale. It has its own troubles too. The coaching mafias like
Lalan Singh are after Anand’s life for ruining their business. Anand struggles to provide his

students with food and books due to his sinking resources. That is not the case with the real-
life Anand Kumar though, who runs a parallel coaching class for affluent students to support
with funds his free Super 30 batch.

There are scenes in the movie that will surely move the audience. Anand Kumar, being a gold
medalist, is forced to sale papad for living. On the day of the IIT Entrance Exam most of his
students go write the exam on empty stomach.

Speaking of the flaws of the movie, one can say that some scenes are way too much to
swallow. Especially the one that where Anand’s students in order to save him, fight a full-
fledged gang of armed men towards the end of the movie. The background score
unnecessarily chips in some scenes which was not needed at all. There are controversies
about the real-life Anand Kumar which the director preferred to exclude.

Hrithik has done well with regard to his Bihari accent and he matches Anand Kumar almost
well after putting up that dark complexion, but the actor’s hazel green eyes too could have
been covered with contact lenses to make him look more realistic.

All that said above, the film deserves one watch from all the age groups. It essays the journey
of an unrelenting teacher who makes miracles to happen, instills confidence among his
students to crack one of the toughest exams of India. To experience the hard-hitting journey
of a real-life hero, audience must go and watch the movie at least once.

The movie drives home the point that in our overly populated nation there is a sizeable class
of students who still can’t have access to quality education due to their financial difficulties.
India needs many Anand Kumar to reach out to that unfortunate lot and uplift them from the
greater depths of ignorance.

I give the movie 4 ****
