CSP Question 03/09/2009 – Statistics

The average score for the CSP Exam in 2007 was 60.2% and the standard deviation
was 13.3. The total number of candidates was 760. Assume the score distribution is
normally distributed. Estimate the number of students that scored higher than 50%.

A. 168
B. 380
C. 458
D. 592

Solution:

x - μ 50 - 60.2
Z= = = -0.77 where:
σ 13.3
x = the score value.
µ = the mean value
ߪ = the standard deviation

The percentage of candidates scoring greater than 50%, but less than the average of
60.2% = 27.9%. The percentage of candidates scoring greater than 50% is 27.9% +
50% = 77.9%.

The total number of candidates is 0.779 x 760 = 592.

The correct solution is D.
