Hand Sanitizing Relay Procedure

1. Practice the below hand hygiene (HH) steps prior to starting the relay so that everyone is
familiar and can complete the steps accurately in the time recommended.

2. At the sound of a loud start signal, the first staff member starts the relay by holding the
alcohol-based handrub bottle and pouring the required amount of the product onto the
cupped hand of the next staff member.

3. That staff member performs the technique as shown in the WHO poster, for the
recommended time.

4. After completion of the HH steps, the staff member immediately takes the alcohol-based
handrub bottle from the first staff member.

5. Step 2 is repeated - the staff member holds the alcohol-based handrub bottle and pours
the required amount of the product onto the cupped hand of the next staff member. Then
when they have finished the HH steps, the alcohol-based handrub bottle is passed to
them to carry on the relay to the next staff member. Each staff member then continues
with the described steps until the last staff member in the relay completes the HH steps.

NOTE: There must be no more than a ten second gap between each participant
performing the hand hygiene steps to cleanse their hands.
