PROBLEMS ON WORM AND WORMWHEELS

2) Design a worm gear train to transmit 25KW at 1000rpm of worm the desired
velocity ratio is 25:1. Determine the efficiency of the drive.
Solution:
Step 1: From table 12.28(b)
For velocity ratio 25 ; Number of start=1=Z1,
i = N1/N2 = Z2/Z1
i = N1/N2 =1000/N2
N2=40
Z2=i x Z1 = Z2 =25

Step 2: Selection of material from table 12.7

For wormwheel(gear),

Phosphorous bronze,( Ϭd)g= 82.4 N/mm2

For worm(pinion),

Forged steel 0.3C (heat treated),(Ϭd)p=220 N/mm2

Step 3: Select the pressure angle from table 12.27 page no 244

Pressure angle φ=14 1/20 for single start thread

When, φ= 14 ½, y= 0.1

The lead angle ϒ=(0-16)

Step 4: Design for worm wheel:

From LEWIS EQUATION , equation 12.5(b)

m3= (2Mt /ϬdCvkπyZ2)

Here the centre distance is not given, the above equation is to be modified

in the form of,

m3Cv = (2Mt / ϬdkπyZ2)

Mt = (9.55 x 106 x P / N2) x Cs

Here, Cs is the service form factor and from table 12.31

Cs = 1.5625

Mt = (9.55 x 106 x 25 / 40) x 1.5625

Mt = 9.32 x 106

Therefore,

(m3Cv)required = (2 x 9.32 x 106/ 82.4 x 7.48 x π x 25)

(m3Cv)required = 3850.31

Here,

Cv is between (0.5 – 0.9)

Take , Cv = 0.9(say)

So, m = 16.23 after substitution

Standard module from table 12.2 is

m = 18

(m3Cv)adopted = 183 x 0.9

(m3Cv)adopted = 5248.8

d2 = Z2 x m

d2 = 25 x 18

d2 = 450

i = (d2 / d1 x tanϒ ) , 25 =(450 / d1 x tan 16)

V =( πd2N2/60 x 1000)

V = (π x 450 x 40 / 60 x 1000)

V = 0.942

Cv = (6.1 / 6.1+0.942)

Cv = 0.866
m3Cv = 183x 0.866

m3Cv = 5051.5

face width(b),

b = 7.48m+ 6.35

b =( 7.48 x 18) + 6.35

b = 140.99mm

Efficiency is given by,

η=( tanɤ(1+µtanɤ)/(µ+tanɤ))
ɤ=100 µ=0.05
η=77.22%
