Course Title: I C Engines (ME F242)

Topic: Fuel Air Cycles (Tut 3) Date: 08/02/2020

Problems to be attempted:

1) The following particulars relate to a diesel cycle.

Compression ratio = 18,
Cut-off=5% of stroke,
Mean specific Heat C v=0.71kJ/kg.K,
Characteristic gas constant is 0.285kJ/kg.k
knowing that specific heat increases with Temperature, If the mean specific heat for the air
standard cycle increases by 2% determine the percentage change in air standard efficiency.

2) An Otto cycle engine with a compression ratio of 10 uses a premium fuel of calorific value
48000 kJ/kg. The air-fuel ratio is 15:1.The temperature and pressure of the charge at the
end of suction are 57°C and 1bar.Determine the Maximum pressure in the cycle with mean
index of compression as 1.36 and the value of specific heat at constant volume heat
addition expressed as C v=0.7117+2.1*10−4T kJ/kg.K. How will the maximum pressure be
affected if the value of C v remains constant at 0.7117 kJ/kg K and also the compression
index is unaltered.

3) An engine working on Otto cycle has a compression ratio 8. It uses hexane ( C 6 H 14 ¿ as the
fuel which has a calorific value of 44MJ/kg. The air fuel ratio of the mixture is 13.8:1. The
temperature and pressure of the mixture at the beginning of compression is 70°C and 1bar
respectively. If C v=0.716 and compression follows the law p v1.35 =C, determine the maximum
temperature and pressure kJ/kg K reached in the cycle:
(a) Without considering the molecular contraction
(b) Considering molecular contraction.
