Kant: Groundwork of the metaphysics of morals

Brief abstract

- The metaphysics of morals, for instance, is meant to be based on a priori rational

principles, but many of the specific duties that Kant describes, along with some
arguments he gives in support of them, rely on general facts about human beings
and our circumstance that are known from experience. The metaphysics of morals
based on the rationality drives morality.

How this could help my teaching style, methodology, practices etc. in the learner set up?

- This work of Kant enlightened me towards the idea of morals in terms of

metaphysics. A metaphysic of morals is indispensably necessary, not merely for
speculative reasons, in order to investigate the sources of the practical principles
which are to be found a priori in our reason, but also because morals themselves
are liable to all sorts of corruption, as long as we are without that clue and supreme
canon by which to estimate them correctly.

Advantages

- Avoids the problem of basing morality on unpredictable consequences.

- Kant provides clear rules that we must follow.
- He stated that as human beings are rational, their dignity, equality and value
cannot be used as a means to an end.

Disadvantage

- It is difficult to resolve moral dilemmas that involve conflicting duties.

I recommend this book for Kant’s aim is to search for and establish the supreme principle
of morality.
