Though not an end in itself, the rudimental approach is a means to developing stick facility. ‘The following rudimental style etudes were written employing tra- ditional rudimental techniques, and in most instances the rudiments are used in traditional manner. Where the etudes do depart from tra~ dition is in the use of time signatures. Rather than the use of stan- dard 2/4, 4/4, and 6/8, meters, 5/8, 7/8, 11/8, and other less common time signatures are used. It is hoped that the etudes will provide the student with a tech- nical as well as mental challenge and at the same time, furnish him with some interesting rhythmical studies. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mitchell Peters, now principal timpanist and percussionist with the Los Angéles Philharmonic, was principal percussionist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He joined the Philharmonic in 1969, and is a member of the Philharmonic New Music Group. He holds the perforner's certificate, bachelor's and master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of William Street. He is the author of numerous works for percussion, both instructional materials and performance works, and operates a company that publishes percussion materials by many well-known con- posers. \ Mr. Peters is the percussion instructor at UCLA, where in ad- dition to teaching privately, he conducts the Percussion Ensemble. He is also on the music faculty at U.S.C., where he directs the Percussion Ensemble and teaches a percussion master class.
