5 MALE REPRODUCTIVE DISEASES

1. Hypospadias- literally “below the fleshy spike”. A condition in which the external urinary
meatus opens anywhere below the tip of the penis rather than at the tip.

CAUSES: Hypospadias is present at birth. As the penis develops in a male fetus, certain
hormones stimulate the formation of the urethra and foreskin. Hypospadias results
when a malfunction occurs in the action of these hormones, causing the urethra to
develop abnormally.

TREATMENT: Treatment usually involves surgery to reposition the urethral opening and
if necessary to straighten the shaft of the penis.

2. Hydrocele- a fluid filled sac partially surrounding the testes. Manifests itself as a swelling
on the side of the scrotum.

CAUSES: It is caused when something is wrong with one of the testicles. Such as,
infection, inflamamation or injury.

TREATMENT: There are two ways to treat hydrocele Surgery and Needle Aspiration, in
Surgery, a small cut is made in the abdomen and the hydrocele is surgically removed.
Needle Aspiration, the needle is inserted into the sac to draw out the fluid.

3. Varicocele- a mass of varicose veins in the spermatic cord.

CAUSES: Varicocele forms when the valves inside the veins in the cord prevent your
blood from flowing properly.
TREATMENT: Laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in your abdomen
and passes a tiny instrument through the incision to see and to repair the varicocele.
4. Cryptorchidism- a condition in which one or both of the testes fail to descend from the
abdomen into the scrotum.
CAUSES: Occur when a combination of genetics, maternal health, and some
environmental factors disrupt the hormones, cause physical changes, and interrupt the
nerve activity involved in the testicle’s development.

TREATMENT: It can be treated by surgery.

5. Prostate Cancer- is a cancer that occurs in the prostate.
