Life goes on
The coronavirus is having a big impact on people’s
lives, causing events to be cancelled and restrictions
on mass gatherings. While life goes on we will all have p24 p30
to get used to doing things differently for a while. The
magazine business isn’t exempted either but we will
do our best to keep bringing you the local news and
information.

Try to keep calm and carry on!
We are all greatly concerned about the impact Coronavirus is likely to have on
our lives over the months. As a care agency we are doing everything we can
to protect our elderly and vulnerable clients and their carers and have sent out
guidelines to all those concerned. I thought some of our suggestions may be
useful to others in a similar situation.
l Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds.
l Always wash your hands when you get home or into work using a hand sanitiser gel if
soap and water are not available.
l Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you
cough or sneeze.
l Put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards.
l Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
l Ensure that there is a good supply of disposable gloves in the house so that visitors can
perform these hygiene procedures.
l Keep visits to a minimum.
l Avoid physical contact where possible.
l If you are preparing food remove or change your gloves, washing hands before
and after.
l Before leaving, dispose of everything safely in an outside bin and wash your
hands again.

If you have a high temperature (37.8 degrees and above), and a new and continuous cough,
you NO LONGER NEED to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation.
However, if your symptoms worsen and are no better after 7 days,
contact 111 or better still online at 111.nhs.uk.
Only in an absolute emergency call 999.
By the time this is published the government will probably have introduced further distancing
measures for older and vulnerable people.
Like the NHS, now is the time to plan and prepare
so we can minimise the confusion and panic.

Parish Council Precept

All households have now received their Council Tax demands for
the Financial Year 2020-2021 and within this there is the precept
that has been set by your Parish Council (PC) to raise the funds
to fulfil its responsibilities and undertake its planned programme
for the year. This will amount to a charge of £55.25 for an average
Band D property and equates to a 3% increase on the previous
year for all properties.
The PC has set a budget of £87,150 for the year and determined
that in the absence of other regular income, it is important
to ensure running costs are met in full by the precept. This is
especially important now that we own the allotments, bowling
green, Poppy Lane car park and the Outdoor Sports and
Recreation Land (OS&R) on Brook Road. The Christmas event, and associated installation of the lights and the
large Christmas trees, has been enhanced and represents a sizeable budget commitment (10k), plus some provision
also has to be made for other one-off community events (like VE day). Furthermore, regular village maintenance has
been expanded following the phenomenal volunteer Best Kept Village effort last year that also identified a number
of jobs that would be best done regularly through contractors (another 5k). Community groups and activities also
benefit from annual grants (10k) and over 2yrs the PC will have granted 10k to the Community Centre roof project.
Also the PC is managing significant and separate project financing in order to deliver the first phase of the Outdoor
Sports and Recreation Land on Brook Road.
Despite this growth of the budget and commitments, the impact per household in terms of the precept is mitigated
such that increases remain in line with guidance levels. This is because the number of households in the village
is increasing and therefore the precept raised increases without any further significant step-up in the charge per
property.
In summary, a budget and precept have been set to meet running costs that amounts to a little over £1 per week per
average household, whilst at the same time many more assets are in community ownership and major investment is
being undertaken in new community facilities.
VE Day Celebration Weekend

– Friday 8th May – Sunday 10th May
This is just a reminder/date for your diary that we, with the help of the local Royal
British Legion, are planning a series of events for the holiday weekend of Friday 8th –
Sunday 12th May, - Friday 8th is a Bank Holiday.
There will be a street party along the High Street on the Friday and a ticketed tea
dance on the Saturday in the Community Centre. More details will be around the
village and on the Tarporley Community Notice Board and the Tarporley Facebook
pages.
However arrangements are subject to change due to the Coronavirus situation.

Room or the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community
Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can
address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the

Hedge between Poppy Lane and the footpath

We thought it was the best option to cut down this section of hedge, that is from the High Street up to
the crossing across the car park to the Primary School gate, and then re-plant it with new bushes. After
we had received complaints from parents about the lack of visibility for children making this crossing,
we found that the hedge had grown well into the access road, was very bare in places with several dead
shrubs. So while this might seem rather a drastic action to take, we think that in the long run this was
the best option.

Super supper night
supports hospital
A sell-out crowd enjoyed a fantastic evening of music and hot pot to raise funds for the Tarporley War
Memorial Hospital Centenary Appeal.
The Friends of Eaton team, led by Mike & Mary Wilson, once again put on a fabulous evening at
Tarporley Community Centre.
After last year’s successful night at Cotebrook Village Hall it was no surprise that no advertising was
needed to ensure that the latest event, held in a bigger venue for a larger audience and dance area,
would also sell out the 140 tickets available.
The key ingredient is the talent of the ‘Cover All Bases’ band which is made up of professional
musicians from the BBC Philharmonic based in Manchester. Made up of 10 multi-talented musicians
the band is led by singers Ronan Dunne and Ellie Owen, both locals, who bring songs from the 70’s to
modern tastes. They were supported by surprise guests, The Eatonians, led by Peter Holloway.
A grand total of £1,560 was raised, with the cheque handed over to a grateful hospital events manager
Sophie Thompson.

Twin towners put their know
A hard fought quiz was held by the Tarporley Twinning Association, to fund exchange holidays for
12-18-year-olds to Bohars, in northern France. The Scout Hut was full to its capacity with about 95
people making up 16 teams of varying sizes, despite, or perhaps because of, the dreadful weather!
Despite being keenly contested, it is mainly a sociable event though and everyone enjoyed the night.
Looking further into 2020 the group will be visiting the twin town of Bohars in Brittany in early May,
and young people from Bohars will return the compliment in August. If you’d like to be involved

Village transport survey
People are being asked for their views about a
community bus service in the Tarporley area.
The responses, whether on paper or online will inform
the decisions about bus services right across the
parishes.
Initially, it is proposed that a range of services that
would, initially, run between 7am and 7pm Monday to
Friday incorporating the best elements of the existing
‘dial-a-ride’ services and operate as fully timetabled
routes providing connections to, from and with
Tarporley, the Arriva 84, D&G 82 services and Northern
Rail at Delamere station. It is also hoped to include
Winsford, Tiverton and other pick up/drop off points.
Frank Tunney, from Utkinton and Cotebrook Parish Council, said: “These routes are likely to be
chargeable services but only to the extent of recovering costs, where possible we would seek to
honour existing concession and bus pass schemes. It should be noted that services such as these
would connect the Parishes to the Tarporley Hub and vice versa to offer wider connections.
“The survey is supported by CWaC Ward Councillor Eveleigh Moore-Dutton from the ‘Members’
Budget’, and she fully recognises the need for social inclusion and connectivity to ensure that all
sectors of our population are able to have access to all the services within and without our ward.”

An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac
arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyse the heart’s rhythm and,
if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective
rhythm.
Of course, you can – and should – request the assistance of trained medical professionals. However,
when a 999 call is made for a cardiac arrest, time is of the absolute essence, because for every minute
defibrillation is delayed, the odds of survival are reduced by approximately 10%. So, having access to

Types of sunscreen
Q. My Skin Care Therapist has recommended a ‘physical’ rather than a ‘chemical’ sunscreen. Why is that and
what’s the difference?
A. There is a big difference in how
each type of sunscreen do their
job. A chemical sunscreen will use
an ingredient such as avobenzone,
which is very effective at absorbing
the energy rays from the sun, giving
you full spectrum protection. It
has the added advantage of being
transparent and so is suitable for all
skin tones. However, the chemical
sunscreen absorbs the UV rays
from the sun turning them into
heat and so this type of sunscreen
is often unsuitable for people who
have sensitive skins, rosacea or any
kind of skin inflammation.
On the other hand, a physical
sunscreen uses minerals such as
zinc or titanium dioxide and they
work by reflecting the sun’s rays away from the skin without creating heat. Until now physical sunscreens have always
created a white or ‘chalky’ effect on the skin, but over the past six years scientists have been working hard to create an
invisible, physical sunscreen which has now been achieved and hit the skin care market in March 2020.

Students visit JCB factory
Miss Windle and Miss Rowlands took a group of Year 12 Business and Technology students to JCB in
Stoke on Trent last month. They went to look at different methods of production and design to enhance
students learning in these areas and see what they learn in the classroom come to life in the real world.
The tour took them through the humble beginnings of JCB at the end of WW2 and told the story of how
it has become the multi-national business that it is today. Students visited the factory floor and looked
at the assembly lines to see how the earth movers and bull dozers are assembled and in what order.

Three pupils from year 7 have made it through to the regional final of the Foreign Language Spelling
Bee Competition.
Heidi Burkinshaw, Milan Clark and Nathan Nuttall excelled when they had to learn how to say and spell
150 words from memory in either French or Spanish. In the next round, they will be tested on 200 words
and will compete against Year 7 students from other schools in the region.

A Beeston woman has been appointed as one of Cheshire’s new Deputy Lieutenants
Sandra Verity is a volunteer driver for the Bridge Community Farm charity, in Ellesmere Port, which
runs an organically grown vegetable box scheme across the region.
She also sits on one of the charity’s monthly management committees and regularly helps out on
their market stalls.
The Lord-Lieutenant is The Queen’s Representative in Cheshire. He or she is able to appoint a
number of Deputy Lieutenants to assist in carrying out his many and varied duties.
Deputy Lieutenants are nominated by the Lord Lieutenant to assist with their duties which include
advising on official events to the county such as those which warrant a Royal visit.
Sandra, who grew up on an organic farm, said: “I got involved with Bridge Community Farms for a
number of reasons.
“Mainly it was their approach to supporting young people and their families in a community
context, giving access to fresh air and learning to nurture, grow and, where appropriate, eat
plants; leading to improved mental and physical wellbeing.
