‘The developed internship took place at GINVEN Moto design.
The internship has been for three months, since June the 12" to September the 12”
2017.
The context of the job was principally take place in the intervention of a BMW K-
100 series motorbike; the reassembly of it and actualization of some broken
components. Also, taking participation in the side covers proposals for a 3D model
motorcycle that is on working.
Work was developed most of the time at the studio's workshop, focusing on
assembling of the BMW motorbike. It was assigned to me in order to put it all the
parts on. Since the frame to the last detailed piece.
Company Description
GIVEN Moto Design is a Natural Person Company. Works as Design Studio.
Its primary objective is the design of motorcycles for private clients who want a
made to measure, it means customization, Also the design for companies that want
to bring their idea into production.
GIVEN makes production service abroad. For customers who need to produce a
specific or serial component, it is working on the 3D modelling and CNC production
in materials such as Aluminum, Stainless steel and Polymers.
Methodological approach is a complete Design process:
a. Brief Definition: Customer needs and product requirements.
b. Bench Marking: State of the art analysis.
c. Inspiration: Collecting a group of images and objects to take those as a
beginning to start the concept proposal.
d. Concept: Sketching ideas.3D modelling and rendering.
e. Prototype: Realization of the selected concept in the real scale.
f. Settings: Upgrade and improvement of the components realized for the
prototype.
g. Final Product: Assembly of components into the final product.
GIVEN studio is divided in two main sections: office and workshop. The office is equipped with four workstations which have PC’s and design tools to.
work. It is a 3D printer that works principally with ABS material and is used to make
parts in the design process for the concept.
The workshop is equipped with manual mechanical tools such as Lathe, mill,
vertical and manual mill and metal cutting machines to produce components and
customized others, according to the client needs. In addition manual tools for
components assembling and disassembling.
Company works mainly for Italian customers, but it has some intemational clients
who order single pieces for motorbikes that have been intervened at the workshop.
I've been placed as Designer and Assembly operator.
Design activities were focused on the side covers for a concept. Sketching and 3D
modelling. Interrelation with designer team workers and the boss taking decisions
for pre and production of.
Assembly operator, which was the main job, was focused on the
BMW K-100 series. Working also in the handmade production of single components
for it at the workshop. Using tooling machines. Interaction with other intern who his
performance was developed as workshop assistant. IN addition with the boss to
solve some problems in the assembly process and in the pre-production of
components.
The main professional interaction was always with the boss, Donato Cannatello,
Product Designer and specialized in Transportation Design and a team colleague
Guiseppe Ammendola, Industrial Designer who is a collaborator at the studio. With
them, we were solving problems and taking decisions on the design process.
Activities and Tasks
To do an introduction of the developed activities at GIVEN, it is important to make
a mention about the tasks which have been assigned to myself: Once joined in the
workgroup, the boss has given the “project” called “Restyling a BMW K-100 series
motorbike, getting it in the current motorcycle style”. (Image 1)Fig. 1 Original BMW K100 series
1. Project timeline
There were some previous steps before | arrived and joined on.
Motorbike Dissembling
Original working components recovery
Design and production of the new components
Motorbike Reassemble
General inspection and tasting

To be precise, | joined at the Motorbike Reassemble. There have been given to me
the final components and engine in order to put it on together.

2. BMW K100 series Reassemble process
2.1. Bike beginning conditions
The starting point was the frame. There was pre-assembled the engine and back
train of that into the bike's frame. It was necessary to get info from the previous
work staff how to proceed, because there were not pre work instruction from
the boss or any trainer at the workshop.Fig. 3 Frame, Engine and back train assembling
There has been found a complete online guidance for this motorbike model, so
it was my main tutor during internship.
Thanks to the book | could start working on my task. The manual is: Repair
Manual (division, 2017)
2.2. Front motorbike train assembling.
Afterthe frame had been assembled, it was the time to fix the fork for the frontal
train. The Fork is a generic component used by the studio depends on the
motorbike model, road trip, and race or city scooter.
The fork holders, support and new handle bar were designed at the studio by the
boss Donato Cannatello and produced in China where GIVEN has its partner for
CNC production.
Fig. 4 Fork and frontal train2.3. External and internal components.
The K100 series front cover was assembled with the original plastic
components and a new light. Internal covers of the same had been modified by
the previous intern who was working on. Also, it was realized the electronic and
electrical testing by an external expert field.
In addition, there was necessary to learn about which kind of screws were the
correct for each component. By the time, some instructions and
recommendations were gotten from the tutor in order to make well finished
assembled components, fixation and security of each one.
Fig. 5 Internal components
2.4. Details and finishing
Dashboard was replaced by a simple mini electronic screen, setting it up by the
electronics expert. Mirrors and turn signals were which were two different
components, were substituted and merged in one piece. .
Fig. 6 Frontal cover, mirrors and turn fights
Mudguards were assembled in the final part of the process as the plastic lateral
covers. The final mounted components were the new back signal lights and the
lateral container. Seat is the original one of the BMW K100, it wasn’t intervened
because in the near future will be treated with other process. It was mounted
but not fixed in order to allow the next step.Mechanics of the motorbike were checking and assembled also; brakes, gas
handle and wire and clutch wire. Hand commands were changed for new ones
and grips
At the final of the internship the task was 90% done because some naturals
inconvenient which have to be solved by the bike’s owner.2.5. Other intern activities
It is important also to do a mention that during the duration of the intern, there
were developed two different tasks more:
The first was to give the support in the assembling of a scrambler motorbike
prototype, it did stop the workflow in the BMW during two weeks.
Fig. 8 Scrambler concept lateral covers proposal
The second additional tasks was everyday cleaning and ordering the workshop.
10Gained competences
During the internship there were different competences which have been gotten in
the developed work.
1.
2.
PAE
Reading and understanding of different drawings for components assemble.
Learning of different kind of screws, bolts, nuts and adhesives used in the
assembling process of a motorbike.
Sketching practicing.
3D modeling
Photo studio for motorcycles.
Workshop hand working with different processes and materids. (wood,
metal, polymers)
Those previous activities and knowledge were developed and learned with the
boss.
Established results
The main objective of the Inter was the total assemble of the BMW k-100 series
motorbike. That was realized in a 90% because there were complications and cther
activities such as supporting of other projects: Assemble of a scrambler motorbike
prototype and workshop cleaning. it was no possible to conclude the seat and its
definitely assembling because it will be treated by a leather craftsman.
In the middle of the Intern, it was necessary to stop the K-100 motorbike assemble
because some components hasn't been arrived. On those two weeks, it was
developed the proposal of lateral covers for the prototype motorbike. In the end,
the ideas where modeled in 3D and rendered.
anPersonal Reflections
. According to the fulfilled tasks: as | have showed and described on the
report, the capability to complete and achieve the object on a project is high
ve been a professional who always is respecting the deadlines and time for
each step in a project, for instance this work | did at GIVEN. It was realized
almost the total work, there were just inconvenient which were solved to
reach the final point of my labor. Also | would like to tell that my skills and
capabilities are stronger than the initial point of the Intem.
. According to the autonomy: during the Internship, | always was working as
independent intem, | received the introduction into the office, colleagues and
spaces of GIVEN studio and my task, after that | was involved in my work,
doing every step with my knowledge and support of manuals which have
been found by myself. However, | got instructions some times by the boss,
but at the same time and it is important for me to tell this part: | could reach
the assembling of the motorbike BMW K-100 series with a 10% helped by
others. | say that my capabilities working on by myself have gotten and well
increasing by the time, and an important thing to say is that the boss has
noticed that and has given me his congratulations.
. According to the other professional roles: there was always a different role
from my really profession. As | told in the activities description, | was working
most of the time as mechanical worker, because assembling a motorbike is
not a competence either for an Industrial Designer of for a Design Engineer.
Even though skills as worker in the workshop, | could get important
knowledge on the assembling processes. Components understanding and
placing. | would say learnt about motorbikes but not as a Designer.
. About personally learnt: itis important to know about your performance when
a work is realized and I think mine was well done. In addition, control yourself
when difficulties with the boss or colleagues appear was a weak of my skills,
but within this Inter I've realized, | could gain and understand how to
manage in well terms those kind of issues. | put all my effort into the activity
and | showed my capabilities to solved miss understandings with the team
work.
. According to my expectations: personally, | think and I'm convinced that the
professional world is not easy. Thanks to this Intem | got experience to face
it. It was ratified that you have to start from the bottom and get climb by the
time because you are just learning the real life. | would like to get my own
12Design studio but to getthat, it is necessary tolearn from experienced people
how the way to arrive there is.
. As additional reflection, | would like to do a mention referring to GIVEN
studio, | agree with the fact you have to get in touch with the real work and
real life before finishing your studies, but on the other hand, the problem
according to me in those little or starting studios or companies is that they
are not well organized and they are not offering the specific role you should
perform during a stage, in this case Design and Engineering of a product.
In addition, this studio just pay for the service of one Designer and we were
five people working for that. So, I do not think it is correct by them. I would
like to ask you in order to pay attention and do a control of your interns
because most of the time offers are not real and in the end students are
developing other roles which are not the focus of their professions.
