Learning Intentions:
 To draw up a trial balance using the appropriate headings.
 To extract a trial balance figure using the general ledgers.
 To be able to complete a general ledger and trial balance.

1. Drawing Activity
Textbook page 290 (Extracting a Trial Balance)

 Draw out 1 (General Ledger) and 2 (Trial Balance).


 Please ensure you label all of the columns.

You will notice if the figure/entry is placed on the debit side (Dr) of the ledger,
it will be placed on the debit side of the trial balance.

If the figure/entry is placed on the credit side (Cr) of the ledger, it will be
placed on the credit side of the trial balance.

2. Write the following success criteria into your Business copy

Success Criteria for completing Trial Balance


1. Draw up your trial balance grid.
2. Label your grid (example on page 289 of textbook)
3. Look at your ledger accounts (see example on page 290)- sales account
has €37,400 on the credit side, so this €37,400 is placed on the credit
side of your trial balance.
4. Place your figures from your ledgers and put them into your trial balance.
5. If there is figures on both the debit and credit side- you will take the
balance b/d figure, if this figure is credit, you will put it on the credit
side of the trial balance.
6. You need to bring your balance b/d figure from your analysed cash book
and place into your trial balance.
7. Once you have put all of the figures into the trial balance, add up the
debit side and add up the credit side. These answers should balance
(figures should be the same answer).
