Pray by Heart Prayer Project
Pray by Heart Prayer Project
OBJECTIVE:
Encourage children to learn twelve basic prayers used in the
Catholic faith.
TOOLS/SUPPLIES:
scissors or straight cutter
glue stick or paste
PREPARATION:
Print out the Prayers to Know by Heart - Student Sheet. One sheet per learner is
required.
Print out the sheet with the Prayers to Know by Heart Mastery Pieces. One
sheet will serve two students when it is cut apart on the gray dotted line
provided. (The Our Father prayer is differentiated from the others because it is
the prayer the Lord taught us Himself.)
Write the name of the student on the student sheet and piece sheet.
Print out the Prayers to Know and More Prayers to Know reference prayer
sheets. You will need one set per student. The images used on the Prayer
Reference Sheets correspond to the Student Mastery Pieces as well as the
Student Sheet. Each image represents the prayer in some way.
**Please note that two versions of the Prayers to Know reference sheet are
provided. Each features a different version of the Act of Contrition prayer.
Select the version that best suits your needs.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Talk about the importance of prayer in the Catholic faith. It is the vehicle of
communication with God as well as our intercessors such as the Blessed Virgin
Mary, the angels, and the Saints. Remind children that we pray prayers we do
not simply recite them meaninglessly. Prayer comes from the heart. If one’s
mind is preoccupied or the heart is not focused on God, the words we pray are
said in vain (CCC: 2562). Prayer is lifting one’s heart and mind to God (CCC:
2559).
Ask children which prayers they already know, are familiar with, or have heard

before. Some children may already know many prayers while other young
Catholics may not. Reassure students that this activity will help them to learn
new prayers as they track the prayers they already know and the basic prayers
they still need to learn.
Distribute your prepared student copies and prayer reference sheet sets to
each participant. Have students read through the prayer reference sheets.
Older students may cut the pieces out that represent the prayers they already
know by heart and affix them to the proper grayscale space on the Student
Sheet with glue or paste. Younger students may need to display proof of
knowledge before allowing them to cut apart and affix the Student Mastery
Pieces.
Set a goal to learn all of the prayers by a certain date. Depending on how
many prayers most children need to learn, you may select a specific date, the
end of a particular term, or the end of the school year.
Many students will easily be able to master one prayer per month if they pray it
throughout the week using the reference sheet. Prayers may also be
incorporated into class prayers as well for additional reinforcement.
Teachers may opt to hold the mastery pieces and disperse them as needed for
each student. Simply paperclip any pieces together and store them in an
envelope.
Student sheets may be stored in a folder or punched with holes to keep in a 3-
ring binder. Alternately, some teachers may want to post all the student sheets
on a wall to display progress. Parents may be invited to visit the classroom from
time to time to see their child’s progress and mastery.
To mount Student Sheet to cork or bulletin board: Affix the arranged and
labeled Student Sheets by using pushpins, tacks, or staples.
To mount Student Sheet to a wall or painted surface: Affix the arranged and
labeled Student Sheets by using rings low tack painters or masking tape on the
back of each paper. Remember to remove completed sheets carefully in
case students would like to save their work.
You can read more about prayer in the Catechism of the Catholic Church
(CCC: 2559-2565).

Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You. I detest all my sins
because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my
God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help
of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.
