March 24th - Día por la Memoria, la Verdad y la

Justicia.

Last Tuesday was a National Holiday in Argentina. Every

March 24th we commemorate the last Dictatorship in
Argentina.

Why do we commemorate it?

Because we don’t want a dictatorship in our country anymore. Dictatorship
generated horror in Argentina and also in Latin America. The military had power
and they received help from the church and the media to cover the reality.
30.000 people disappeared and they were all tortured and killed. Women were
raped and if they were pregnant, the military took the babies and gave them to
their friends. Some people never appeared again, and mothers and families
started looking for their family members in the 70s and they continue today.

Who is looking for the disappeared?

The State is looking for the disappeared, and also three specific organizations.
They are “Madres”, “Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo” and “H.I.J.O.S” They also help the
society remember what the dictatorship was. Important artists also help with this
cause. Many national and international rock bands recorded songs about the last
dictatorship (La Bersuit, Charly Garcia, Attaque 77, Leon Gieco, Sting, U2, etc...)
and you can listen to their songs on the radios.
