Introduction
INTRODUCTION

A propulsor is a mechanical device that gives propulsion. The propulsors were commonly used in
the marine vernacular, and implies a mechanical assembly that is more complicated than
a propeller. The conventional propeller used is the fixed pitch propeller. But now the modern
developments had led to some other types of propulsors. There are many type of propulsors that
are used in the marine industries. For an example:

 Contra-rotating
 Ducted
 Podded
 Rim-driven
 Water-jet
 Surface-piercing
CONCLUSION

In general, the type of propulsors that want to be use must meet the requirement of the type of
vessel. Propellers can be manufactured with 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 blades. The fewer the number of
blades, the higher the propeller efficiency will be. Propulsors are designed for both high
efficiency and low noise, reducing propeller-induced hull-pressure fluctuations to a minimum,
while avoiding erosive cavitation. Increasing demands tend to be imposed with regard to the
radiated noise level of the propulsor, further limiting the design space. It is possible to create the
propulsors that have lowest tendency to cavitation process.
