2. How did the author(s) justify the significance of the study? or Why is it
worth doing the study? or What is the contribution of the study to the
field?

 The authors wrote the importance and the impact of the topic research in our
life. Their research was gleaned from the existing literature on the subject.
They conducted a thorough literature survey and identify gaps in the current
literature. They wrote this was to introduce the current literature in the
background/Introduction section and then highlighted the gaps in the literature
that had not been addressed or are yet to be understood.

 The contribution of the study to the field is to investigate the connection
between Korean children’s participation in interactive book reading program
and their development of pragmatic competence in English.

3. Make a list of reporting verbs that you found in the literature review.
4. Give 3 examples to show how the author(s) quoted or cited in the
literature review?
- The authors citied by showing directly the opinion of another author.
Example: “ Kramsch notes: Teaching how to shape contexts of interaction can
not be done directly by well-closed administraction of fact…Pragmatic
knowledge…can only be acquired through observation and analysis and a feel
for the whole social context. It is not an “if then” affair. It requires, therefore,
a totally different pedagogic approach. (p.92)”.
- The authors quoted the sentences from the literature review and list the authors
of previous studies or theses and the years in which they made their statement.
Example: In first language (L1) situation, children obtain these pragmatic
skills through engagement in communicative activities with their caregivers or
more expert communicators (Gumperz, 1982; Ochs & Schieffelin, 1979;
Schieffelin & Ochs, 1986).
