The process of de-spinning an asteroid is simple on a small scale but that’s
more than enough to prove that it is indeed possible to de-spin an asteroid.
This process of de-spinning is demonstrated through certain solutions. The solution I will be discussing involves the use of a laser that will oppose the rotation of the asteroid. The laser will be fired at an ablation point on the circumference of the asteroid. The laser will be fired in the same direction the opposite side of the circumference is rotating, to oppose its rotation. After a certain time (which may vary between asteroids) the spinning will come to a complete halt. The spinning will not continue again unless an external force acts on the asteroid. This de-spinning is achieved due to the balancing of forces between the rotational velocity and the force the laser exerts on the asteroid. An equation is given based on the asteroids rotational velocity, Moment of Inertia, Torque of the ablation point, and the Torque of the friction on the asteroid.
