South Wales Physio Courses

South Wales Physio Courses is a group of NHS physiotherapists representing


many specialties working within ABMU Local Health Board. We are committed
to providing a broad range of fairly priced postgraduate physiotherapy training
courses in South Wales that are available to any interested physio. Courses
are taught by both internal and external tutors including physiotherapist,
consultants and other recognised health professionals to ensure the highest
standards of teaching possible.

Spinal Manipulation (Grade V)

This two-day course gives participants the practical skills needed to safely
and effectively perform localised spinal manipulation (grade V) techniques.
Indications, precautions, and contraindications are discussed. Case studies
are used to illustrate selection of techniques and develop clinical reasoning.
The evidence base supporting manipulative techniques in the treatment of the
spinal dysfunction is presented. The number of participants is limited to 14 to
ensure a high level of supervision and feedback.

This is a practically orientated 2 day course teaching the concepts developed
by Brian Mulligan. Participants will be taught effective techniques using joint
mobilisations combined with active or passive movement in functional
positions. Areas covered in Level 1 include the cervical, thoracic & lumbar
spine, upper limb, lower limb, headaches and vertigo

Society of Orthopaedic Medicine – Module B


Dates: 15th & 16th and 29th & 30th June 2013

Module B aims to develop clinical reasoning and assessment skills through
enhanced knowledge of functional anatomy and an accurate diagnostic
approach. Manual treatment skills covered include transverse friction
massage, graded mobilisations, manipulation and traction to the Lumbar
spine and lower limb. Injection theory and technique is also discussed.
The SOM Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine is an academically recognised
qualification which is worth 60 master’s level credits and may be counted
towards other postgraduate qualifications, including the SOM MSc in
Orthopaedic Medicine.

Kinetic Control – Lumbar Spine

This highly practical course teaches the application of Kinetic Control
concepts to patients with low back pain. Topics covered include a review of
functional anatomy, review of postural types,
identifying uncontrolled movements at the lumbar spine, myofascial influences
on the lumbar spine, strategies to retrain local and global stability muscles,
kinaesthetic repositioning, dynamic movement correction and improved
clinical reasoning.
The tutor, Sarah Mottram, is the co-founder of Kinetic Control and has
lectured internationally on the Kinetic Control method for over 17 years.

APPI Matwork Level 1

Matwork Level One is the first in the series for the matwork certification, it is
also the foundation course for all modified pilates teaching courses. This
course introduces the pilates technique, relevant research, beginner level
exercises and contra-indicated exercises. Sixteen movements for training
lumbo-pelvic, scapulo-thoracic and cervical stabilisation are learnt through
observation, self-participation and practice teaching. Discussions of the
clinical application of the pilates movements will occur at the time of their
teaching to provide participants with the understanding to be able to teach
these exercises to patients and clients after the course.
