WHAT IS TRANSFORMER
Transformer is electrical device consisting of two or more coils of wire
used to transfer electrical energy by means of a changing magnetic
field.

3
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Transformer works on the principle of mutual induction of two coils or
Faraday Law’s Of Electromagnetic induction. When current in the
primary coil is changed the flux linked to the secondary coil also
changes. An EMF is induced in the secondary coil due to Faraday law’s
of electromagnetic induction.

TRANSFORMERS TURNS RATIO

NP = primary winding turn number

Ns = secondary winding turn number
VP = primary winding voltage
Vs = secondary winding voltage

TRANSFORMERS TURNS RATIO

Problem 1: A voltage transformer has 1500 turns of wire on its primary coil
and 500 turns of wire for its secondary coil. What will be the turns ratio (TR)
of the transformer?

Problem 2: Find the applied voltage of an iron-core transformer if the

secondary voltage is 240 V, and Np= 60 with Ns = 720.

Problem 3: A single phase transformer has 480 turns on the primary winding and 90 turns
on the secondary winding. The maximum value of the magnetic flux density is 1.1T when
2200 volts, 50Hz is applied to the transformer primary winding. Calculate:
a) The maximum flux in the core
b) The secondary induced emf
