For a mixed ensemble of woodwinds, brass, strings (bowed, plucked or struck), and pitched percussion —
the more instruments the bettér, but no fewer than 16. ‘The players are to be arranged in four groups — in
front of, behind, to the left and to the right of the audience — in a way which maintains, as much as
possible, an equal distribution of pitch-registers and timbres with respect to spatial location. Each player
is equipped with a stopwatch. There is no conductor.
‘The score consists of 57 time-segments or “measures” of 20 seconds each, in which are notated varying
sets of “available pitches”. Each player selects one after another of the pitches given for the current time-
‘segment, in any order, but favouring pitches not then sounding in another instrument. Each tone should
be preceded and followed by a rest, and sustained for one full bow or breath (on bowed-string and wind
instruments), or until the tone has decayed to inaudibility (on piano, harp, guitar, vibraphone, etc.).
Note: In the first performance of Form 3, the ensemble consisted of 21 players, and comprised the
following instruments: 2 alto ‘flutes, English horn, 2 bass
