Today I will explain the types of settlement and plot characteristics where we have two
types of settlement, two plot characteristics and the cultivation systems

• Types of settlement
It is a area where people establish a community, this can transform the landscape. We
have two types of settlement:

Concentrated rural settlements, this

consists in group the houses together. This
let to the inhabitants, have access to
numerous services.

Scattered rural settlements, this

consists in isolate houses. In Spain, this
takes the form of small villages.

• Plot characteristics

A plot is a section of agricultural land. There is a lot of types of sizes, shapes and
boundaries. We can find two types of plots.

Open fields, regular plots without

boundaries. Common in Central Europe.

Bocage or enclosed fields, irregular plots

separated by hedges. Typical from European
Countries near the Atlantic Ocean.

• Cultivation systems
We have three techniques of cultivations:
Crop diversity:
Polyculture: the farmers grow different types of crops in small plots
Monoculture: the farmers grown a specific type of crops
Irrigation system:
Rainfed farming: land need rain
Irrigated farming: part of the water are provided by artificial means
Land use:
Intensive agriculture: maximum productivity, reduced space and large
investment in seeds, machinery, fertilisers
Extensive agriculture: large areas, large amounts and low cost
