PROCEDURE:

A. Variable Flow Rate at Tube Side

1. Set up the Heat Exchanger apparatus by supplying water at the hot and cold tank. Also,
connect the discharge hose for the shell and tube-side into two separate receiving
tanks.
2. Connect the apparatus to the power supply.
3. Turn the valves to ensure a counter flow connection for the water flowing through the
shell and the tubes.
4. Set the shell side bypass valve to POINT 1, while the tube-side bypass valve to POINT A.
5. Turn on the heater to start heating up the water inside the hot tank.
6. Observe the temperature of the hot tank using a digital thermocouple until it reads 55
°C.
7. Shut off the heater and immediately start the two pumps to facilitate heat transfer
between the hot and cold water.
8. Measure the volumetric flow rates at the discharge of the shell and tube-side by
measuring the time it took to fill a certain volume of water.
9. After 30 seconds from starting the pumps, read and record the temperature readings for
both inlet and outlet conditions of the shell and tubes at the digital thermocouple
assembly.
10. Turn off the two pumps. Supply fresh amount water into the cold tank and return the
hot water discharged back to the hot tank.
11. Repeat the same procedures from 3 or 4? to 10. Turn the tube-side bypass valve to
various points: B, then C, and D to produce varying the flow rate of water at the tube-
side while maintaining the shell-side bypass valve to POINT 1.

B. Variable Flow Rate at Shell Side

1. Maintain the water in the hot and cold tank by supplying fresh amount water into the
cold tank and returning the hot water discharged previously back to the hot tank.
2. Set the tube-side bypass valve to POINT A, while the shell-side bypass valve to POINT 1.
3. Turn on the heater to start heating up the water inside the hot tank.
4. Observe the temperature of the hot tank using a digital thermocouple until it reads 55
°C.
5. Measure the volumetric flow rates at the discharge of the shell and tube-side by
measuring the time it took to fill a certain volume of water.
6. After 30 seconds from starting the pumps, read and record the temperature readings for
both inlet and outlet conditions of the shell and tubes at the digital thermocouple
assembly.
7. Turn off the two pumps. Supply fresh amount water into the cold tank and return the
hot water discharged back to the hot tank.
8. Repeat the same procedures from 2 or 3? to 7. Turn the shell-side bypass valve to
various points: 2, then 3, and 4 to produce varying the flow rate of water at the shell-
side while maintaining the tube-side bypass valve to POINT A.
9. Disconnect the apparatus from the power supply and discharge the water inside the
heat exchanger and tanks.
