A discussion on the controversial policy taking SGS by storm

The history of dress codes goes back
thousands of years of men telling women
what they can and cannot wear. While what
you wear should be your choice, women
especially have continuously been target-
ed throughout history for what is on their
bodies. Dress codes enforce an old-fash-
ioned type of control over bodies and cement
dangerous ideas. have worn. It all comes down to what the

tension in today’s word, especially surround-
ing education. Many people find issues with
common dress codes and believe that they
do more harm than good. School dress codes
exist to keep the learning environment free
of “distraction,” but what does that mean?
Distractions are ever present around students
in school, from computers to pencils to
windows, but this distraction of a student’s
body is seen as a takeaway from their peers
learning. The assumption that the female
body is inherently sexual and that either
shoulders or bellybuttons are too sexual and
distracting for teachers to teach and students
to learn is a dangerous concept that dress
codes cement. Taking a student aside to tell
them what they are wearing is distracting
is more distracting from the educational
mission itself than a crop top will ever be.
Students come to school to learn, and not to
be objectified by authority.
Dress codes also perpetuate rape
culture. The idea that it’s the student’s
responsibility to cover their bodies in a
“non-provocative” way to cater to others is
the epitome of victim blaming. Modern dress
codes in schools cater to the idea of “boys
will be boys” and it’s the female’s respon-
sibility to cover up and not be a distraction.
It is no longer about teaching men to not

look and respect women’s bodies but women
covering their bodies to cater to men.
A large amount of subjectivity also
surrounds dress codes. The enforcement
is entirely subjective, not everyone can be
dress-coded, and different body types are
more prone to issues with modern dress
codes. One can wear the same thing but be
dress-coded dependent on their body type.
This also leads to body shaming.
Another complication stemming from dress
codes is how they target women specifi-
cally and reinforce patriarchal control. For
centuries men have controlled what women
person wants to wear. Control over what a
man deems sexual on young girls only leads
to problems.

At Saint George’s, the dress code in
the student handbook has several problems
in its composition. It states “School attire
should reflect workplace norms regarding
modesty. Clothing that distracts from our
educational mission is not allowed.” This
excerpt states that certain clothing worn by
students does in fact “distract from learning”
and shouldn’t be allowed at Saint George’s.
To start, isn’t pulling students out of school
and taking focus off their education more
distracting? To point out that they are not
living up to the standards of “modesty” de-
marcated by male authority and will be sent
home if they don’t cover up is more distract-
ing than a shirt that shows as much skin as
your arm.
If you do indeed want to continue to
dress code young girls, you should explain
why. Tell them that their midriff distracts the
male teachers and/or students and it is their
responsibility to cover up and be “modest.”
Hiding behind the guise of “it’s the rules”
never brings into question why and will
continue to perpetuate the pattern of sexu-
alizing young girls’ bodies. The subjectivity
of “modesty” in our dress code is also quite
perplexing. What is deemed modest by
authority? What this part of our dress code
really means is, don’t wear what men have
deemed not “modest” for women in society.
Workplace norms? Those have been created
by men for women. “Workplace norms are
men’s norms,” said Dr. Andrea S. Daub.
“Male norms continue to dominate work-
places, although women represent almost
half of the American workforce.” The very
fact that our dress code uses the term “work-
place norms” is problematic in itself.
Overall, this doesn’t mean that dress
codes should be entirely eradicated, how-
ever. Clothing depicting hate speech and/
or symbols should not be allowed in any
environment. But dress codes based off of
male norms for women and sexualization of
women’s bodies are old and have no place
in a school. Our Head of Upper School,
Dr. Francesca, seems hopeful for a change.
“As societies evolve, school policies should
evolve too. The norm around dress code is
changing and it’s our responsibility to talk
about it as a community. I look forward to
this conversation as a woman and a fem-
inist.” Hopefully this opens the path to
discussion about amending our current dress
code as a community.

Common holiday problems and their solutions

Over break, I was lost in
thought. I pondered chaos theory,
religion and evolution, and whether
water is wet. (It isn’t.) However, one
thing just kept weaseling its way back
into my mind because you can’t avoid
it these days: the holiday season.
The holiday season is the time
from Thanksgiving to New Year’s
Day and is allegedly characterized by
festivity and happiness. It encompass-
es holidays like Christmas, Kwanzaa,
and Hanukkah, and even if you don’t
celebrate any of those, it’s still a time
where you don’t have to go to work
and can instead spend time with fam-
ily and friends. Although this might
be just dandy for some people, there
are some problems with the way we
celebrate the holidays that shouldn’t
be overlooked.
It all begins on November 1st.
We’ve just celebrated Halloween, then
by the next morning it’s like thieves
descend into our city and steal all the
pumpkins, replacing them with trees,
tinsel, strands of lights, and orna-
ments. The Grinch Stole Christmas?
More like the Grinch steals Halloween
and glosses over Thanksgiving.

Ever felt stuck on a tough
essay? Needed a proof-read on a lab
report? These are problems that every
high school student experiences,
whether you are a proficient writer or
not. The writing center is open to all
students, of every age and grade. It
provides a quiet and focused space to
work on your assignment. As readers,
we make sure that you feel safe to
share your ideas in the center. Each
session can last as long as you need,
either ten minutes or the entire period.
The Holiday Hullabaloo
them, some people do enjoy going
straight for the holidays as soon as
it hits November. These people are
extremely motivated to bring joy into
the world by decorating public areas
and listening to festive music and
can often be found clashing with the
Post-Thanksgiving oliday hardliners. I
was fortunate enough to witness such
a dispute earlier this year—decora-
tions adorned the Senior Lounge, but
they were eventually removed after a
fierce debate among these two dispa-
rate factions. Now I’m no expert, but I
don’t think argument and defacement
of streamers is what the holidays are
all about.
While researching the holi-
day season, I came across some other
concerning issues. (Okay, researching
is a bit too strong, I read one Wikipe-
dia article.) It turns out that holiday
get-togethers are correlated with an
increase in heart attacks, and if you’ve
ever been to one you understand why.
Additionally, shopping for gifts causes
families to lose money in real terms
because they buy presents that others
don’t really want and won’t actually
use. The pressure of buying presents
has led to headaches in approximately
one-fourth of people, and even sleep-
lessness for 10%.

You can schedule an appointment or
simply walk in if nobody is working.
The readers have been through
a long training session and are special-
ly prepared to help you with whatever
you may need. They are not there to
just improve your grade, but to make
you a better writer. You and the reader
will go through a list of checkpoints to
make sure your writing makes sense.
They will check sentence structure and
paragraph coherence, but most of all,
they are there to make suggestions and
give you general feedback. Ask your
teachers if they are willing to give you
extra credit in return for editing in the
I’m sure after learning about
this trauma you too will be leaping out
of your seat to cancel Christmas—I
know I was. But after some diaphrag-
matic breathing to calm myself down,
I realized there was another solution.
We should just add stress-relieving
days to the calendar that everyone can
enjoy, no matter what age. Let’s make
December 4th “Unplug Your Neigh-
bor’s Annoying Lights Day.” This
day would singlehandedly save the
planet, let alone our sanity. Then, on
December 11th, we could have “Pop
All the Giant Blow-up Reindeer Day.”
Adding this day is a no-brainer. You’re
enjoying yourself, getting exercise to
ward off cardiac failure, and perform-
ing a free neighborhood beautifica-
tion service. Lastly, I propose that on
December 27th we add “Shamelessly
Give Everyone Receipts for the Gifts
that You Bought Them Day,” so that
no one has to go through the awkward
procedure of asking for the receipts to
return unwanted gifts. By adding these
days, I think we could fix the rage
and distress that accompany the most
wonderful time of the year.

become better teachers and improve

5G Technology
How this advancement will change the way we live

In the 2019 Mobil World Congress,
one of the most attractive new technologies
is 5G. 5G is the abbreviation of the fifth
generation of the cellular network. The
change from 4G to 5G is a leap comparing
to previous changes. The key features of
5G will lead humans to a higher quality of
life. Those features are eMBB, uRLLC, and
mMTC. So, what exactly does this mean?
The eMBB stands for enhanced
mobile broadband, which means wid-
er broadband. The feature allows 5G to
transfer a larger amount of data in a shorter
time, compared to 4G. Hospitals have also
adopted 5G technology with VR to operate
remote surgery. With 5G, doctors in the
United States can see the clear live video of
surgery in Singapore’s hospital. Not only
can patients in Singapore enjoy the medical
treatment from the United States, but also
patients from the countries which do not
have well-developed health services can
share the advanced technologies from the
United States or other developed nations
through 5G technology.

Private school education seems
to care more about projecting a perfect
image of the school to the parents than the
students’ happiness. Not too long ago, I
decided to wear a crop top to school. I felt
confident and beautiful in the shirt. In the
past, this hasn’t been an issue and students
have been free to express themselves (for
the most part). I was pulled out of my
A Block class to discuss another issue
regarding the Senior Lounge and then was
promptly told to cover up. I figured this
was coming, but I was shocked that it only
took administration 30 minutes to take
issue with my shirt.
There was so much I wanted to say, but I
could only muster up the courage to say
“no”. After some arguing back and forth,
I was given an ultimatum to cover up or
the uRLLC, which stands for Ultra-reliable
low-latency communication. 5G can lower
the latency to 1ms. If it takes 0.23 seconds
for a human to wink, then the 5G can trans-
fer the data from a personal device to an
internet server 230 times as quick as a wink.
Thus, the human is capable of inventing saf-
er self-driving automobiles, because 5G en-
ables self-driving automobiles to exchange
information between autonomous vehicles
in less than 2ms. The car industry calls
this technology “Vehicle to Everything” or
“V2X.” This leads self-driving automobiles
to a new level.
The last new feature is mMTC,
which means massive Machine Type of
Communication. It connects billions of
computers. Does it sound like the Skynet in
The Terminator? The Skynet connects all
electronic devices and controls them. For-
tunately, 5G is capable of connecting them,
but not controlling them. By connecting all
of them, humans will enter an era of big
data. 5G is a key to beginning that era.
There are many new and exciting
features that come with 5G. 5G will ad-
vance society and bring the way people to
live to a whole new level.

Slut-shaming students shouldn’t be en-
dorsed by the administration and staff for
this very reason. In all honesty, most of the
administration doesn’t care either way or
is willing and open to change. However,
pressure from a small group of conser-
vative parents seems to unduly influence
their decisions. I don’t understand why our
school (a place that’s supposed to inspire
scholars, athletes, and artists to serve and
lead others) is wasting their time policing
female students. The school should care
more about the concerns of the students
than the utopian image it tries to portray to
parents and other investors.
