Saint George’s new and bold advocate for mental health

Many people have probably noticed our new
guidance counselor, Meghan Anderson. I know that a
lot of people have met and talked to her, but many don’t
really know what the purpose of her being here is. This
article will help you get to know her and understand her
roles in our everyday lives to better our futures. Meghan
studied sociology, because she wanted to help people
and genuinely loves getting to know them. “Counseling
allows me to not only connect with people, but also help
them through some of the hardest times in their lives.
It is a very rewarding career that helps me feel like I
am adding a bit of light into the world,” says Meghan.
Working in a new place, being expected to get to know
everyone and help them can be a daunting task, so I
asked her how she likes SGS so far. She stated, “I am
really enjoying my time at SGS – the people here are
kind and supportive and have been very welcoming.
The students have been incredible to work with and I
have loved getting to know everyone.” I asked Meghan
what her main purpose is for having this job. She said
she is here to help us deal with our emotional, social,
and academic well-being as well as the development of
students.
Getting and receiving health can be hard for
many people, especially when talking to someone you
might not know or trust. Building relationships and
gaining the trust of those you want to help is a vital
step to helping people with needs. This is exactly what
Meghan plans to do. “I check in with students on a
regular basis regardless of their level of need so that if
and when times get tough, they understand I am a safe
person and someone who is ready to listen and help.”
As a student, I know when someone takes the times to
get to know me, I feel safe and trust them to understand,
support, and help me with whatever I’m facing. I think
that getting to know Meghan will allow students to have
a person they can trust and reach out to. Even knowing
a little about someone, such as their greatest accom-
plishment, can help form bonds. Meghan says “I’m
most proud of who I have become and how hard I have
worked to get where I am. I have had a lot of really
wonderful opportunities in my life, so I guess I am glad
that I embraced those opportunities and encouraged
others to do the same.”
Becuase Meghan is very passionate about
psychology, I decided to ask her what ways work best to
treat mental illness. “All of the research says that a com-
bination of therapy and medication is the best treatment
for most mental illnesses. I believe that mental illness is
just like physical illness and there should be no shame
in asking for help if you need it. Realizing that you can
connect with others and acknowledging that you have
the capability to overcome your struggles are crucial
steps in working towards being a healthy individual. It
is really important to have healthy sleeping, eating, and
exercise habits.” I hope this article will help you feel
like you have someone who is willing to help you, and
someone that you can trust.

knows how proud I am of my three daughters.
I have photos of graduations, weddings, and
State games, original oil paintings and senior
pictures. To be sure, their accomplishments are
admirable. But let me tell you about the times
when I was most proud of my daughters:
Molly and I were walking through Pioneer
Square in downtown Seattle. Under the shade
of the trees, several elderly men sat quietly on
the ground, most with their life’s possessions
piled around them. They were a dirty, ragged,
pathetic group, certainly homeless, probably
drug addicts or alcoholics. As we walked by,
Molly looked at them and said, “That makes
my heart hurt.”

PowerSchool Learning
Move over Moodle, welcome PowerSchool Learning

The Upper School is abuzz with
discussion about a change that will drastically
affect the day-to-day lives of everyone. Have the
bus routes changed? Is Saint George’s building
a dam on the Little Spokane River to harness
hydroelectric power? Has the IB really decided to
give everyone 7’s? Have Chad Rigsby and Pete
O’Brien teamed up to teach a class on symbolism
in the Periodic Table? No, Saint George’s School
has decided to switch their learning management
system from Moodle to PowerSchool Learning.
A few years ago, Saint George’s began
using Moodle—a website that categorizes classes
and shows assignments, tests, and other class
events on a calendar. It’s not perfect, but both stu-
dents and teachers benefit from Moodle. Students
can merely log on to a website and see all their
assignments neatly organized. Teachers can post
these assignments on Moodle instead of writing
them on the board. However, starting next year,
the school is removing the website and changing
it to PowerSchool Learning. The Middle School
and Upper School Language Department have
already made this switch. Although teachers
and parents will benefit from the website, many
students are skeptical about this change.
PowerSchool Learning offers numerous
benefits to teachers. This program will interface
directly with the PowerSchool gradebook, which
the school is already using. Currently, teachers
need to post assignments on Moodle and then
enter them separately into the PowerSchool
gradebook. Using PowerSchool Learning instead
of Moodle will streamline the assignment process
and cut the time that teachers spend entering
assignments online in half. In addition, teachers
will be able to directly embed videos and other
files, such as Quizlet flashcards, into the descrip-
tions of assignments. Finally, the mechanics of
the website vastly improve upon those of Moodle.
“The interface for Moodle,” remarked Director of
Technology Travis Cullitan, “doesn’t really meet
modern web-browser standards.” The website
will also make it more convenient for parents to
see their children’s assignments and grades.
The linkage between PowerSchool
Learning and the PowerSchool gradebook has a
few drawbacks that some Upper School students
and teachers pointed out to me. The first, which
frustrated some students, is that PowerSchool
Learning currently uses Office 365 as a sign-
in, instead of the same one as the PowerSchool
gradebook. In addition, one teacher told me
that they felt that the linkage between the two
websites would incentivize students to check
their grades too much and obsess about the points
rather than the content itself. Finally, numerous
students told me that PowerSchool Learning is
more difficult to navigate than Moodle, and that
they were frustrated that they had different class-
es’ assignments spread across these two websites.
I asked Cullitan what he thought about
all this. First, he told me that the unified login
for the PowerSchool websites is likely coming
for both students and parents over the summer,
so that they will have one password and account.
Secondly, he mentioned the progression of the
website. “PowerSchool Learning started life as
a separate learning management system called
Haiku, and PowerSchool bought them two years
ago, and they’re actually improving it quite a bit,”
said Cullitan. He acknowledged that the current
situation in which students must log into Moodle
for some classes but PowerSchool Learning for
others is not optimal. However, this issue will
be resolved next year when all classes move to
PowerSchool Learning. As with all transitions,
people will be disgruntled initially, but once they
adapt to the change, it usually isn’t so bad.

When you really think about it, if Santa were real*, he
would be on the most wanted list.
For decades an intricate lie has been passed from genera-
tion to generation. It consumes our movies, TV shows, music, malls,
and even our homes. It is also one of the most cheerful holiday
traditions. Santa Claus, the jolly fat man who brings us presents, has
some minor creepy flaws but is a fun myth to tell as children. By
now everyone knows who Santa is; however, no one really thinks
too much about how creepy he would be if he were real. In the real
world, Santa is breaking several laws daily. He stalks every single
child on planet earth. The whole “he sees you when you’re sleeping,
and he knows when you’re awake” thing is down right terrifying. If
he were real, he would have watched every second of your child-
hood. That’s stalking every child ever. Santa also sneaks into every
house on earth in one night. Usually when someone breaks into a
house they would get arrested for breaking and entering, so Santa
would have been in jail thousands of times over the decades. Living
in the North Pole might serve as a good spot to hide from the cops,
but not everything happening there is legal either. All the elves work
hard year round to create toys for all the children. They stay in the
factories, keeping the assembly line moving to get all the dolls and
trains and puzzles packaged up. However, they do not get paid.
These are hard workers who have no other options for employment,
and they don’t have a salary. The elves are basically modern day
Christmas slaves. If Santa Claus were real, people would hate him.
They would want him in jail for the numerus crimes against human-
ity he has gotten away with over the many decades of his impossibly
long life.

Clark, the 9th grade basketball coach strongly
encouraged her to turn out for the team based
on her performance and leadership on his vol-
leyball team. Katie thought it over, but decided
not to play basketball. I asked her why, and she
told me “I don’t really love basketball. If I play
on the team, I will be taking a spot away from
some girl who really, really wants to be on the
team, and that’s not right.”
Patsy was describing one of her patients in
New Orleans. She wasn’t bragging about the
advanced treatment or fancy technology they
were using to treat this women. She was telling
us about the woman’s life, and how difficult it
was for this patient to access medical services,
and how her financial situation made it difficult
to buy healthy food or follow through on the
prescribed treatments. I could tell Patsy truly
cared about this patient as a person, and she
was trying to understand the challenges her
patient faced because of poverty.
All of these examples show something that I
am afraid is too often sadly lacking: Empathy.
Putting yourself in the other person’s situa-
tion and trying to understand what they are
dealing with. Not judging someone who is less
fortunate than you are. Cutting the other guy
some slack.
The “caravan” of human beings moving north
from Central America through Mexico is a per-
fect example. I won’t try to tell you what our
government policy should be. But I will say
that our initial response should be one of empa-
thy. Imagine how terrible their lives at home
must have been for them to set out walking
hundreds of miles just to try to find a better sit-
uation for their family. Anyone thinking about
how we should deal with the caravan should
begin by trying to appreciate the tragedies
these people have faced that prompted them to
set out on foot.

something everyone can enjoy. The activities
range from making snow angels, to skiing
down the tallest slopes. The best feeling is
spending an entire day outside in the snow
and then returning to the warmth of your liv-
ing room. Rosy cheeks, a chilled nose, peel-
ing off your layers one by one until it feels
as though you’ve shed a skin. The moment
of skating hand-in-hand, or rushing down the
ski slope, finally landing a jump you’ve tried
ten times before. There’s no day like heading
out to the local park to sled down a gentle
hill, or try out snowboarding for the first
time. These winter sports are what makes
this time of year so amazing, like hockey, ice
skating, and the Winter Olympics (which are
the better Olympics, no argument). The ex-
hilaration is unmatched. Besides the sports,
it’s the spirit of the season that really makes
it great. People hang colorful strings of lights
from their rooftops, and stick cheesy Santa
figurines on their lawn. Inside the houses,
there’s tall pine trees, strung with popcorn
and shiny ornaments. The smell of evergreen
drifts through the room, along with a hint of
peppermint. Piles of presents sit underneath
the tree, begging to be unwrapped. In the
kitchen, someone is piling marshmallows on
a cup of hot chocolate, or cooking a warm
shepherds pie. Kids all across the world
wait for reindeers and elves, hoping they’ll
receive the items they wished for. They put
out warm milk and cookies, not knowing it’s
the parents who’ll eat them. The next morn-
ing, they wake up at the crack of dawn, and
sprint downstairs, knowing what awaits. The
whole day is filled with light and laughter,
arguably unmatched by any other holiday.
It’s fair to say that other times of the year
have their benefits, but this season’s pretty
great too. Whether it be the scenery, the
sports, the holiday, or even the food, winter
is more than meets the eye.
