_Student Name Student#
Problem 1: a) Steam at 0.4 MPa, 300 C, enters an adiabatic nozzle with a low velocity OF 10 m/s and leaves at
0

0.2 MPa with a quality of 90%. Find the exit velocity, in m/s.
b) What is the best fluid(liquid) to transport energy?? And why??
c) What is the best material to insulate the ceiling of your house? Can it be used to insulate a giant industrial
glass furnace? Why or why NOT?

Problem 2: a) Three kilograms of nitrogen N2 gas at 27C and 0.15 MPa are compressed isothermally to
0.3 MPa in a piston-cylinder device. Determine the minimum work of compression, in kJ!
b) Write True (T) or False(F) next to each statement and correct the wrong statement!
1. All energy on earth comes from the sun Except COAL energy
2. Potential (gz) energy is very HIGH in industrial plants and can NOT BE NEGLECTED.
3. The best economy type is An Economy based on RESOURCES.
4. The most powerful country in the world is BRUNEI because it has OIL.
5. The first law of Thermodynamics is essential n ENERGY BALANCE.
6. Air conditioning, Iron, and Water Heater consume very LITTLE energy at home because
they have HIGH efficiency of conversion of electrical energy to sensible heat.

How much money will you save per year if the cost of electricity is SR 0.14/KWhr??
Problem 3: Determine the specific volume of superheated water vapor at 1.6 MPa and 225 oC based on:
a. The ideal gas equation. R = 0.461 kPa.m3 /kg.K.
b. The compressibility factor, find Z from chart
c. The steam tables
Problem 4: Two million kilograms of air per day are heated from 300 to 500 K. Find the change in enthalpy by
assuming: a. Empirical sp. heat data from Table A-2(c). &
b. Use the 300 K value for the specific heat from Table A-2(a).

Problem 5: The lower half of a 10-m-high cylindrical container is filled with water (ρ = 1000 kg/m3) and the
upper half with oil that has a specific gravity of 0.85. Atmospheric pressure = 100 kPa. Calculate the absolute
pressure on the tank.
