EXAM I Time: 1 hr TUESDAY 29th Jumada I I 1440 H
_Student Name Student#
b) What is the best fluid(liquid) to transport energy?? And why??
Q 2: a) A thick-walled Tube (Pipe) (A) having a thermal conductivity k=21.63 W/m.K with
dimensions of 0.0254 Inside Diameter (ID) and 0,0508 m Outside Diameter (OD) is covered with
0.0254-m of Asbestos Insulation (B) (k= 0.2423 W/m.K) The inside wall temperature of the pipe is 811
K and the outside surface of the insulation is at 310.8. For a 0.305 m length of pipe, calculate the heat
loss and also the temperature at the interface( border) between the metal and the insulation
b) Name Materials that can be used to insulate houses against heat in SAUDI ARABIA! Can these
materials be used to heat an industrial furnace at 1000 K Why or Why NOT!
Q3 Air enters the compressor of a gas-turbine plant at ambient conditions of 100 kPa and 25°C (h1 =
298.2 kJ/kg) with a low velocity, and exits at 1 MPa and 347°C (h2 = 628.1 kJ/kg) with a velocity of 90
m/s. The compressor is cooled at a rate of 1500 kJ/min, and the power input to the compressor is 250
kW. Determine the mass flow rate of air through the compressor
Q4): Two kilograms of air are heated from 300 to 500 K. Find the change in enthalpy by assuming
a. Empirical specific heat data from Table A-2(c). b. Air tables from Table
A-17.
c. Sp. heat at the average temperature from Table A-2(c). d. Use the 300 K value for the sp heat
from Table A-2(a).
